Astell & Kern SE100: A&futura Impressions - Reviews

What's the noise floor like for the SE100? I'm using it with Westone ES60 which is ultra sensitive to noise. I'm trying to decide between the SR15 and SE100. Sometimes higher powered device may not sound better when they try to integrate enough power to drive full-sized can and end up raising the noise floor.

This isn't a scientific answer, but based on my brief experience, the SE1000 has a noticeably lower noise with sensitive IEMs.

I took a fairly long listen to the SE100 at RMAF this year and now I am really considering getting one. The issue I have with most players is there streaming capabilities. Sense Tidal is my mane streaming app I have come to enjoy MQA and usually choose an MQA album if given a choice. I have a Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital DAC that is capable of doing the unfolding, decoding and authenticating the MQA fills, so I use Tidal with the pass through setting and let my Pre Box S2 do everything. They were very helpful at the show with my questions, but would someone please verify that the SE100 does all three. I would not be using the SE100 as a DAC but if I were to would I set my computer to pass through like my Pre Box? I know that Tidal will do the first unfold in their app, my Fiio 3 does that.

Is there no answer to my question?

As it seems to be a problem with the Amazon Music app itself, we are awaiting for an update to the app from Amazon.

Does Amazon know about this issue with the AK Players? So its just a matter of time till it works?

For anyone worried about hearing loss, get some Beyerdynamic T1 G2 600 ohms LOL. Has anyone tried them with a balanced cable? Is it worth me buying one? I'd like to take the T1's for weekends away and vacations if the SE100 drives them OK balanced.

BTW, they go great with my HA-1. Won't comment too much yet, sounds like they need a long burn in. I'm liking the size and comfort compared to my HD 800S' so far.

You won't have a problem pairing SE100 with ES60, I just sold my SR15, and am also currently selling my SE100 for $800 if your interested.

The SE100 is a nice step up from the SR15 in terms of detail and as someone mentioned above, the SE100 does indeed have a lower noise floor (inaudible to me) compared to the SR15, which is no slouch though, minimal but audible noise floor on the SR15.

We are aware of the issue happening with all of our octa-core CPU based players - the SE100, SP1000, SP1000M and SP2000. Our hardware and software teams are looking into it. There is no issue on any of our quad-core based CPU players - SR15 or KANN CUBE.

... are there any new information regarding the Amazon HD issue with the SE100 ? I'd like to enjoy my music again on my A&K and not on my iPhone :frowning2:

@JasonNYC

Hi Jason, from the line up of AK players, which one performs best in terms of clock jitter ? I’ve seen that SE100 is advertised as 800fs while sp1000m is 25ps and sp1000 is 30ps.

If 1ps = 1000fs, this would mean that the sp1000m would be having 25000fs, which would be a lot higher than the SE100.

Is it better a lower or higher clock jitter?

Lower clock jitter is better.

These daps use multiple clocks, for the CPU/XMOS which relay the digital music (pcm/dsd) to the Dac (800fs in SE100, 25ps in SP1000M).

and the reference clock for the Dac (250fs in SE100 and 200fs in SP1000M).

I think maybe because the Sabre ES9038Pro Dac in SE100 is more sensitive to jitter they went with multiple femto clocks in the design, while the AKM Dac in SP1000M seems to do fine with just a single femto clock for reference.

Waiting for this also but I gave it up. I wrote also to Amazon but no response from them nor Astell & Kern. There is coming one Version after another but still not working.

Coming back to the se100. I traded it for a 1000m, had sony fiio... But the se100 turns out to be my favorite. Going to pair it with Valkyrie. Feel se100 is vastly underrated.
