Converted a huge amount of AIFF files to FLAC and sure enough they seem to indeed playback gapless without issue. Also tested some converting to ALAC and they still produce the slightest of gaps. Much less a gap than AIFF files but a gap nonetheless.

So for me, it is only FLAC files that playback gapless properly.

Astell & Kern have asked me to send them some files for them to test. Will do so.

For those interested, A&K came back to me after I sent them some AIFF files saying:

“Our team has checked on the issue and this will be improved in the next firmware update for SA700.
However, we hope for your understanding that we are not aware of the exact date for firmware to be available yet.”

for me at least soundwise is a very subjective thing. People will wax lyrical about soundstage, detail resolution etc.
The biggest difference for me would be the crosstalk - this can be seen if you look at graphs on a measurement site like reference pro (not sure if we can give links in here). This makes sense as the two channels no longer share a common signal path for the return current.
That and it eats battery a bit more quicker - but that isn't sounds related

ddhifi 4.4mm adapter for A&K works great with SA700. Some claim this improves sound quality because a grounding point is added to balanced connection. 2.5mm balanced doesn't have grounding but 4.4mm does. Adapter uses 3.5mm as the grounding point.

It does appear to yes! Some months ago I emailed them some live AIFF tracks for them to review the issue. Playing them now with the 1.4 Firmware all okay now. Very pleased.

Getting improved battery life with latest firmware as well. Impressive how A&K didn't abandon the unit from support perspective.
