Astell&Kern Launches New flagship DAP and an IEM Collaboration with Empire Ears

@JasonNYC Still curious about this.
No word yet. Definitely will not see the new UI appear in any of the 2+ year old players, but possibly in the ones released in the last year. No confirmation on that yet for the newer players, just pure speculation on my part at the moment.

kind of bummed that the new player will not support the PEF21 cable. does not look like the connectors are in right place anymore. maybe I am wrong
Yes, it will no longer work. 4.4mm jack is in the middle between 3.5mm and 2.5mm and so the spacing has increased.

Any difference in sound between the 4.4mm and 2.5mm connection?

I’ve preordered the SP3K and the Odyssey’s as I’m sure the combo will be excellent.

However:
I’ve been looking at the impedance ratio using the 4.4 outlet with the Odyssey’s. I am no expert, I’ve been told the ideal ratio is 2.5-8 iem impedance to source impedance, closer to 8 being better.

Using Odyssey in the 4.4 outlet is only 1.3 (2.1/1.6).
As they’ve been designed for the SP3K, they must be an exception to the general rule.
Can anyone explain this to me?
Thanks

The Odyssey is quoted as having an impedance of 2.1 ohms at 1Khz as you said. That is a ridiculously low impedance. One issue with that number is that is a useless spec because we don't know what the impedance is at 100Hz or 5Khz or 20Khz.

If you are the kind of head-fier that worries about impedance matching then you should be concerned, I would be. The lowest impedance IEM that I own is the W80 and that is 5 ohms at 1Khz and I have to be careful what I plug it into, I can certainly tell the difference between a device with a 2 ohm and a 10 ohm output impedance with that IEM.

Good luck finding a device with a 0.21 ohm output impedance, they do exist but should you buy a DAP or DAC based solely on its output impedance?

Not that I was going to buy the Odyssey but I would probably have to put it to the back of my list, based solely on that part of the specification.

Sorry I can't offer better news and my opinion is not going to be a popular one here, but it is just that, my opinion.

Edit: BTW I use my W80 with the Luxury and Precision w2 which has a measured output impedance of 0.73 ohms (balanced) This still doesn't quite meet the magic ratio but it's the best device I have for driving the W80

Thanks for your reply user9876. I checked this out before I committed to the preorder, but as they are designed to pair with SP3K, I assumed there must be some exceptions to the general rule. I’ll still go ahead as I’m not planning to use them with other sources and from your point above about being careful what you plug it into, I’m guessing there’s a chance of killing the iems if the source impedance is fairly high? If that’s possible there should be a warning of some kind in the user manual, I’ll be sure to read through when they arrive.
Thanks again

Don't worry no damage will occur to source or IEM in normal use so that's all OK.

The Odyssey's low impedance will make it very sensitive to source impedance when used with various different source devices but if you like the sound a particular pairing gives you (after all you is all that really matters) then its all good.

Odyssey delayed to December?

Odyssey delayed to December?
Just got all the info a few minutes ago and was going to post on the various threads.

While some regions have already received a limited number of Odyssey units, there will be a global delay in fulfilling existing orders. All North America orders are expected to be fulfilled by mid-December, if not slightly earlier. We were told we could get a few now and wait for the rest of the shipment until the first week of December but opted to wait for the entire shipment to become available in December to fulfill all orders at the same time.

Hi Jason
I was told yesterday that the Odyssey’s are expected to arrive in Australia this week. Are you able to confirm that they are in transit please?

I had confirmation today, I should have the Odyssey’s in a few days now.
