Astell&Kern Launches New A&norma SR35 Player

That is really good question! So far I somehow understood that all those DAPs (I suppose including SR35) have just some overcharging protection but I never heard of the option to disable charging in USB-DAC mode. However it is true I never explicitly asked if something like that exist for SR35 :k701smile:

According to my understanding, in general the best battery longevity is achieved if battery is used somewhere between 20% and 80% (roughly). If it is constantly kept near 100% then it will die after short time - it will lose a lot of its capacity after just let's say 3 years (experience with lap tops). So, overcharging protection will help a bit but not entirely, because protection will just stop charging when 100% is reached and then re-activate charging again after it drops for just a couple of percent.

@JasonNYC could you please shed some more light? It would be perfect if it could be added through the firmware to disable/enable battery charging when in USB-DAC mode, or even better to implement some automatic battery management, to specify at what exact battery percent charging automatically starts and percent when it ends (while in USB-DAC mode).

Thanks.
Desktop mode! :)

Even a tiny dap like the Shanling M0 Pro will let you automatically disable charging while it's being used as a usb dac. But some daps don't, like my Fiio M15. It can disable charging altogether but not selectively, and you have to manually toggle it on and off. Actually with my first M15, the battery became so swollen it dislodged the display - but I was using it as a usb dac like half the time, which wasn't doing the battery any favors with no automatic management of some sort. Fiio replaced my unit but I do make sure to toggle battery charging on/off if I use it as a dac. I figured SR35 would probably have something like this(desktop mode), since I know it's becoming more common. Thanks!

I tried searching and couldn't find a concrete answer...if I'm using the SR35 in single-ended can I still get the quad dacs? Or will it only use two of them, or even just one?

Thanks

Yes, Quad-DACs are outputting when using either single-ended or balanced output.

It is safe to leave the player plugged in. The player will automatically turn off charging when the DAP reaches 100%. There should be no degradation in battery life or performance if it is left plugged in.

Thanks @JasonNYC for your reply!

Following question arise then. After reaching 100%, charging will be turned off, but how much percent battery needs to drop for the charging to be automatically reactivated?
Usually on other devices, e.g. phones, it will drop just a couple of percent (maybe 1 - 2%) and then device will reactivate charging. In other words, if device is constantly plugged, then it will be constantly kept very close (equal) to 100%.

SR35 has Li-Polymer battery. In general, those batteries are known to show noticeable degradation if constantly kept close to fully charged. Battery capacity will be reduced, but the worst consequence could be a swollen battery (as @SweetCans928 experienced), which could further damage the device. There is a lot of info on Li-Po batteries online, nothing new was said here.

So, I still think some battery management (through the firmware) will come in handy :k701smile:

I notice on my SR35 and SE300 that when it reaches 100% in USB DAC mode it never drops down from 100% at any point, even after an hour of using it. Which worries me.

FYI, next firmware update is expected to be released tomorrow, January 24th sometime in the morning Korea time (will probably be around 8 pm tonight here in the US).

If there is a delay for any reason, I will let everyone know.
