Great thread. I have been using the Empire Ear Odin's for about a month now and I'm loving them. I'm using my new AK SR25 as well as a high end 2 channel amp/dac set up and boy do these scale. I'm looking at the DX220 Max and the AK SE200.

Has anyone done a side by side with these two?

AFAIK DX220Max sounds like DX220 with Amp8.

thanks. I still don't know how the DX220 sounds with Amp8. I'll go search for reviews. Just hoping to get someone who has heard both.

I haven’t heard SE200 yet but have DX220 and Amp8. Amp8 gives a bigger body to the music with more power but is slightly muddier than the stock amp.
DX220 is a brilliant DAP but has a bad battery life.

iBasso just doesn‘t seem to be able to get theIr UX right with all the bugs and the terrible battery life. Some time back ago when we were first going gaga over the SQ of the DX100, we had hopes they would get better at this with each iteration of their DAP. Sadly, it was not to be. Not sure if you all remember the AK100 which came out after the DX100, but soon AK far outstripped the iBasso DAPs in terms of reliability etc.

I was trying to decide between the two and I ended up pulling the trigger on the DX220 Max today.

Bloom Audio has a brief side-by-side comparison available here:

I feel that DX220 has its own niche but you do need an AK to compliment it

Do you use the Odin purely out of the SR25 or do you add the amp/DAC to the set up? I just want know if the SR25 is good enough on its own to run the Odin and still get great sound. It would be interesting to know how much better the SE200 may be for this setup.

Thanks!

So should I get this, or the SA700?

I haven’t heard the SA700, so it would be hard to say. I suppose you could live happily with the DX220 and SE200 in the same lineup, but they are not on the same level in my opinion. The SE200 is superior in most ways. After hearing it, I personally had no reason to go back to my DX200.

If you are dead set on having two DAPs that perform on a similar level, then it might make sense to go with the SA700.

Anyone know how the SE200 sounds compared to the Sony WM1A and Lotoo Paw Gold Touch? I know they are all different price points.

Many asking questions in addition to mine that I just quoted. Surely, someone has heard all of these daps.

Is the SE200 warm on the AK dap side and analytical on the SE dac side? Is the SE200 bass lite? I want slightly warmer. I heard the SA700 was bass lite. Are all AK daps bass lite? I have not heard any of them.

The Cube certainly isn’t bass light... accentuates bass notes more so than the SR25 and the SP1000m (from memory)

Thanks. It is large though right? That is my turnoff on the DX220 Max along with the face you must charge it twice (USB for dac battery and AC for amp batteries).
