The purpose of that interview was more about advertising than truly informing.
Unnecessary.

I think he did well considering how these things usually turn out.

Management doesn't want him to divulge business/product strategy.

Lawyers don't want him to say anything offensive/incorrect about the competition.

Sales don't want him to steer people towards certain products, it's their job.

I think he spoke as freely as he possibly could being from such a large company, this is sennheiser we're talking about after all.

You have to read between the lines a bit but that's to be expected, very nice interview I think!

Doesn't the Sony XB1000 have 70mm drivers?

Yes. And the MA900. And there's also a Koss from ages ago that had ~77mm drivers, and a Lafayette that had ~80mm drivers. But with possibly the exception of the MA900, those are not "current production" models.

Assuming his experience would be accepted as the final word, Axel Grell settled two debates I have had with fellow Head-fiers that I didn't even think were debatable and supported what I thought:

1.  Driver size does matter
2.  The driver is the most important part of the headphone

i wonder though why a lot (or almost all) of the dynamic headphones have 40mm drivers, what's so special about this figure? ( i did ask this at the Q/A but got no answers)

It seems like most of the next gen headphones have 50 mm drivers- AKG, Yamaha, V-Moda, Sony, Velodyne, Ultrasone, etc.

bigger drivers generally have better bass response and lower distortion i guess?

Probably the price-to-performance sweet spot.

Ultrasone HFI-780 40mm
more expensive than
Ultrasone HFI-580 50mm

shure srh940 40mm
more expensive than
shure SRH550DJ 50mm

you have to take also in account the material used by the driver, the magnets ....
And I  guess bigger driver would also mean lower performance on the treble,
otherwise why most speakers would need two drivers ( tweeter, and subwoofer)
