Are you smarter than a 5th grader?

Young people (and I mean really young) have been proven to be more adept at solving certain trick mathematical questions, and indeed even magic tricks. This apparent intelligence is due to the fact that unlike those who have gone through the higher levels of education, they haven't been taught to assume that every question has an underlying complexity from the start. Instead they immediately assume the obvious. Older people, because of what they've been taught, tend to discount the obvious as.. 'too obvious', even subconsciously.

There are 7 girls in a bus, each girl has 7 backpacks. In each backpack, there are 7 big cats, for every big cat there are 7 little cats.

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

I sure hope those kids didn't get that exact question; the grammar is atrocious! Break up those run-on sentences, or at least put a some conjunctions in!

I think if I got this question from my 10 year old niece, I'd say, "I'm not sure, Katie. Let me think about it for a while," and then pretty much act like I'm ignoring her. In no time she would be telling me the answer (in less than 2 minutes probably). Then I would just say, "Of course. I knew that. I was just trying to see if you did."

Then for the rest of the 1,000 mile journey she would forever be the one that was confused about whether I really knew the answer, and therefore she would be the one racking her brain and asking her mom and dad questions about me! You've got to understand 10 year old nieces, or they can really play you!

Funniest response I have heard.

BTW, given the intelligence of the type of people who find our hobby interesting, it doesn't surprise me that many, if not all of you, had no problem with this.

You would be surprised how many people that I have shared this with took a while to figure it out.

Wait; so now that you're in seventh grade you're no longer as smart as a fifth grader?

Are you sure you can't find one fifth grader you're smarter than?

Unfortunately it seems vbulletin does not allow me to attach an .xls file. Sorry.

To show we got the right answer. I did all the working out in the same way you did there, so should have got the right answer.

Admittedly, my dismay may have been slightly disproportional...
