Hello,
How are you?
I gave a question for you and would really love to ear your opinion.

Currently I listen to music from my macbook, mostly ALAC, through a Fiio E17 and a pair of Philips citiscape Uptowns.

I am thinking if upgrading to the UE6000 would give me better sound with my current setup.
I read some reviews here and on other sites of the UE6000 and they are supposed to be pretty good,
My question is if they are noticeable better than my current Philips.
Can anyone comment?

My other option, a bit more expensive are the AKG K551.
They are more expensive than the UE6000, but are they better?

Please help me out with your knowledge and experience.
Thank you!

Cheers!

Anyone?
I would really like to upgrade my headphones.
Using the cityscapes with the Fiio to listen to Alac has been such a revelation from the traditional MP3s trough earbuds, that I want to take it further with some better phones. :)

Cheers!

Both would probably be considered upgrades.  I've owned the UE 6000's multiple times in the past and I still have my K550/1.  I prefer the AKG's more but the UE 6000's are still a very competent headphone.  Check out Tyll's review on both models.  They both made it to his wall of fame at some point, with the AKG being knocked by the UE 6000's.

IMO, I would probably just get whatever is cheaper out of the two.  I hope that helps a bit!

Thank you very much for your insight!
I much appreciate it.
Today the UE6000 went up in price and are now very close to the price I can get the k551 for.
Are there any better options?
Since I use them at work, they need to be closed so they don't leak sound for my co-workers.

Also, would they make a "earable" difference to the uptowns?

Cheers!

If you think you may need to move around while wearing the headphones, the UE6000 might work better for you. Overall I prefer the more open soundstaging, detail, and fast clean bass of the K550, but the UE6000 is my favorite travel headphone.

I don't have any experience with the 551, but both the UE6000 and especially the K 550 sound cleaner and more resolving to me compared with the Uptowns, which I found to have a nice warm sound, but the midbass seemed to muddy up the sound.

The UE6000 sounds better than the K550. The K550 is dull and boring in comparison! don't get me wrong it's a decent headphone but it just doesn't sound exciting at all. The UE6000 does most things better, soundstage is similar, bass goes to the UE but the AKG is a tad cleaner but nothing too noticeable to be a deal breaker.

UE6000 mids never sounded right. Felt like a giant wall of sound in front of me that I could never quite get into, couldn't quite break into that wall. If that makes sense. In comparison, Mad Dogs I feel surrounded by the mids instead of outside looking in. Very liquid, dynamic. Mad Dogs outclass them in every way.

For around $100 though, UE6000 not bad. Not worth the $200 I paid new though (I got my Mad Dogs for $200 used).

Thank you for comparing the K551 with the UE6000.
How about the UE against the Philips? Any insight?

Cheers!

I've demoed the Philips Uptown but to be honest it didn't grab me at all. I can't really give you a fair comparison.

Others to consider

Mad Dogs - Warm, balanced a bit boring sounding though and can be a tiny bit dry but excellent!

Sennheiser momentum - Warm balanced very good sounding although congested sounding.

V-Moda M100 - Bassy, Fun, a bit dull in the mids and highs.

Denon D600 - Bassy, Fun, detailed with a wide soundstage..
