Ah, yes, but the devil's in the details.
What is the nature of this provision.
Is it only available with Video, like the lame line-out of the D2?
Is it a straight up digital output from a point before the DAC, or is it converted from analog before it goes out?
In short, does it provide for optimal signal handling from music files?
Perhaps Morphsci can elaborate for us.

While I don't have a PMP with the capability nor the programming experience, I would be interested in seeing what would be needed. A player running embedded Linux should, in theory, be able to do it given some software changes, seeing as most (all?) USB DACs don't need any extra software in a default regular Linux setup. Alas, I don't think any PMP runs Linux, though at least one of the new Cowon models runs WinCE.

Jet87: Several members of the forum for the Linux-based Nokia N800 (and N810) internet tablet are looking into its suitability for connecting to a portable external dac amplifier through the Nokia usb port. If interested, check this site:

I asked the same question on the same forum some time ago...

N810 + USB Sound ? - Internet Tablet Talk Forums

It's still not clear to me what exactly is entailed (in making a USB dac like the Predator work with the Nokia internet tablets) ...

I've only used the SPDIF out with audio files, I have never played a video file on the Q5W, nor do I intend to.

I do not see why the SPDIF out would be converted from the analog? That would be Dig--DAC-->Analog--ADC-->Dig--SPDIF Out--> rather than DIG--SPDIF Out--> which seems convoluted.

One thing to be aware of is the digital volume control is implemented early on in the digital circuitry and is active on all outputs, digital and analog (just like my TACT S2150 speaker amp).

With the digital volume set to max there is little difference (IMO) between FLAC played through my Headroom desktop portable using optical out from my Asus tablet or the Q5W.
