I think for $75 or so they are very good, while a bit lacking in mids for my taste. In my opinion, an ATH M50 for $119 provides greater AQ than the price difference and therefore is a much better value.
I wouldn't associate "punchy" bass with XB700, it has big bass but also the least punchy bass among heavy bass headphones. At this price I'd look into Denon DN-HP700, punchy, snappy, textured bass with absolutely brilliant mids and microdetail and quite nice highs. Those goes for like 100~$120 in the US and gets you $300 worth sound quality. Not sure if the quantity of bass is enough for your taste though, it may not satisfy extreme bassheads but it does have a noticable boosted bass but it also rolls-off a bit in the subbass though.
XB500 I wouldn't recommend other than if you're willing to EQ as otherwise the mids and highs is being too much sacrificed IMO to recommend them in this case. They have good EQ potential though and they pack a lot of punchy bass. In my subjective opinion the XB500 goes from like $60 worth sound quality unEQ'd to like $120 with optimal EQ settings.
The XB700 have great bass. Maybe not punchy but it's deep. The mids and highs are great. But if you're looking for extremly clear mids and highs maybe you should go with other headphones.
