Apples iPod Mp3 player

Someone may have had the iMP name, but it wouldn't have stopped Apple because "Intel may have an earlier claim on the IPOD name, according to The Register. " (which is off of ibookzone.com)

Hmm...they say in that FAQ that I-Pod is the first player with this level of storage and 10 hours of battery life. I'm sorry, but that's a load of bull. The PJB packs a 6.4 gig hard drive at LEAST, and a 20 gig if you want it, as well as 12 hour battery life. Either Apple hasn't done their homework, or they think we're all idiots...

Ner, look at the thing. does it even matter?!

and the HD of the Ipod is much more versatile as well.

Hehe, that's not what it says, Neruda. It says:

...iPod is the first digital audio player to pack up to 1,000
songs1 and 10 hours of battery life2 into an ultraportable
package...

Keywords are "into an ultraportable package."

The PJB is 150mm x 80mm x 26mm (312 sq. mm) and weighs 10 ounces.
It has a 6GB (unformatted) hard drive, 10MB RAM, and battery life is approximately 6-8 hours (from the reviews I've seen).

The iPod is 101mm by 62mm by 19mm (119 sq. mm) and weighs 6.5 ounces.
It has a 5GB (unformatted) hard drive, 32MB RAM, and battery life is approximately 10 hours.

In terms of size, the iPod is just over 1/3 the size of the PJB, and weighs 1/3 less. So I think their statement is pretty fair.

Believe me, as an MD fan, I really want to criticize this thing, but it's pretty hard. My only (fair) criticisms are no line out and the drive size/cost. However, the drive size/cost isn't Apple's fault -- the drive technology alone is $400 for 5GB right now, so it's like a free MP3 player
wink.gif
I'll bet that the price comes down significantly (or the drive size increases) once Toshiba starts reducing the price of the drives.

No recording ability also a potential criticism, but it doesn't concern me because I don't see hard drive-based MP3 players as targeted at recording.

If it has proprietary rechargeables....it's sunk already in my book.

I mean, that was my biggest grudge with the IDEA behind the Treo......

Imagine.....on a plane......to the Bahamas.....your using your favorite closed cans.......completely immersed in the music................music.....................mus ic..........BEEEEEEP!!!....(look down, your face pales)....."Battery Dead".........and you're still 4 hours away from even a PLUG!!!

they just love selling their proprietary battery packs!

On the other hand, since it can be powered by an adaptor or through the firewire port, some enterprising diy type will find a way to attach an external battery pack for long flights. Say, for example, someone who goes on occasional dive trips to Fiji.

Bula!

Still, the battery pack problem is a big issue for me.
The Sony MZ-R700 that coolvij and I own gets 50 hours on a SINGLE AA battery. That's enough for two straight days of music!!
I'm heading to the Kingdom of Tonga for the peace corps in February and I have no idea if I will be near electricity. A AA battery is available anywhere. I'm going to run into a few issues with my Compaq Ipaq 3650 PDA/Laptop (this thing does absolutely everything!), but other than that, I'm good for having no electricity!
Before I got the MZ-R700, I owned absolutely every solid state MP3 player. I have to say that this one is unbelievable (ok, so its not solid state, but its size is comparable)!!! I so wish it ran on AAs!!! Of course, I also wish it worked on PCs, the only reason I'd buy an apple product is to run linux on a titanium powerbook.... those things are sweeeet!!

BTW,
Regular AA and 9V back packs for firewire power have existed for a while for firewire hard drives. Still, I don't like it

Sucks to be in a small disgruntled minority!

i was waiting for a decent MP3 player to go along with my 2 macs, and my mom wants one too for her mac. I have a G4 Cube( 500MHz, 40GB HD, 640MB RAM, RADEON, DVD drive, with 17 inch flat panel) and an iBook (graphite special edition, 466MHz, 10GB HD, 320MB RAM, DVD) running OS X 10.1 of course (no i´m not bragging

) Cheers to Apple! now who wants to say PC´s are better? hehehehe one cool little product makes PC users drool with their boring boxes while we are just waiting for our mothership to spurt out more little spaceships(iPod, even goes with it, lol) And i do agree now that i have the flat panel and the cube, it is the world´s coolest looking computer!! the iBook isn´t bad at all, and i´m getting a new PowerBook G4 in January when they introduce the updated(even more) TiBooks. Anyone else wants to diss apple, stop drooling over www.apple.com, wipe your mouth off, then try to

Read a couple more reviews/articles today.

One nice bonus: one reviewer said that his actually lasted consistenty over *13* hours per charge while running at *full* volume.

Another picture from a different angle, showing the "Hold" button mentioned previously:

And another bonus -- Breakout, anyone?
