You will see now all of a sudden companies will release products that can beat the iPod or at least give it some competition

Anyone know if there are any firewall adapters for microphones? I always like to have a live recording option.

gotta agree with everyone else here, that interface is beautiful. I wonder if we have any brave souls here willing to open up their newly ordered ipods and see how possible it is to upgrade the HD?

yes, this is great that Apple is making a HD mp3 player. This will really give them a reputation they didn't have before (HD players, not Apple!). I guess I'll have to go get a job and wait for that six month price drop...

I'm also amazed at how high the power outputs are for every single HD player. For some reason, every time I brought this up in the past all the MD guys shrugged it off. Now that Apple's doing it everyone's amazed that a portable exists with 30mWPC. The Personal Jukebox has 50mW, the Treo was supposed to have 100mW (may it rest in peace), and on and on. I just hope they didn't measure the output into like 8 ohms or something...Does anyone know how many ohms that power goes into?

Neruda, I think part of it was that these "powerful" headphone jacks ended up being pretty weak from the reports of people who had used them. That could also be the case with the iPod.

What is intriguing me about the iPod, as a devoted MD user who isn't a big fan of HD-based MP3 players is:

1) The size. It's by far the smallest HD player on the market.
2) The interface -- the first HD player that actually has a decent interface and navigational ability
3) The battery life and recharging ability
4) The integration with iTunes
5) Firewire instead of USB (this is huge for me, because it means I could transfer AIFF (the Mac equiv of WAV) files of entire CDs very quickly, giving me TRUE CD-quality on a portable)

These things really set it apart from any other HD player on the market. The only down side is no line out.

For you "other" people out there (you know, the non-Mac-using ones

), you might find this interesting (taken from a CNET article):

Quote:

Jobs said the focus this year was on bringing the iPod out for Macs, but he added that the company will consider making it compatible with Windows-based PCs "when we get some free time."

"While we know the experience won't be as good (with a PC), we will probably look at that down the road," he said.

I think it's cool - but not for me.

MD is *perfect* for my kinda portable application - and CDs ONLY at home. I mean.....they sound SO much better!

A thought just occurred to me. Isn't Apple really the king of rebellious companies now? We get nervous as schoolgirls about exchanging a few homemade cds over the holidays and they launch a multi-million dollar campaign "Rip, Mix, Burn" !? And now they're offering the coolest MP3 player on the earth? Hey, RIAA, sic someone on Steve Jobs' ass, and let this bunch of humble headphone jockeys have some fun! Apple does "think different" - smart, very smart. And they must have one hell of a legal team. Walking the line, Apple! Alright!

when you have a lot of CD's coolvij, HD players start looking a lot nicer.

MacDEF, where'd you hear that (re: power output)? Ian said that the personal Juke killed any other portable he'd ever used, in both sound quality and volume. the Nomad Jukebox puts out like 5mWPC however, but it's the only one that does.

Neruda: No - even if I had a million CDs, I wouldn't want a hard-disc player. They're VERY cool - but not affordable enough for me.

I mean, I listen to music portably for about 30 minutes in situations when I *have* to (bus stop, bus, halls, active use). The rest of my listening COULD be done on my Senns or whatnot - I just like being able to walk around my house without all those wires.......

Seriously - HD players are for people who listen to LOTS of music PORTABLY quite a LOT.

Which would be.........not me.

Actually, under Steve Jobs' leadership, Apple has always been a rather rebellious company. The slogan of the original Mac development team, which was displayed on a flag with skull and crossbones over the Apple headquarters back in the early 80's was "It's better to be a pirate than to join the Navy."
It wasn't until Jobs was forced out in 1987 that Apple began to go downhill. Since his return, Apple has once again become THE major innovator in town. Any company can produce a product similar to Apple's (like the Compaq iPaq), but they never seem to be able to duplicate the style and elegance built into every Apple product. There is no laptop on the market that has the "cool" of the Titanium Powerbook, and I would venture a guess that no company will produce a HD MP3 player with the physical elegance and the seamless interface of the new iPod. Those of us who have been using Macs for years cannot understand why all the Windows people just don't get it. Once you go Mac......you never go back.
