lol, if you could afford a million CD's, you could probably afford a HD player

AIFF of course, it is lossless whereas mp3 is lossy...

Though you can only store 9 CDs worth of music if you choose AIFF in 5 gigs...

Apple site says the transfer of the whole CD takes only 10 seconds over the Firewire.

Since I have a fairly large CD collection, I wonder if it would make sense simply to rip the CD directly to this device, instead of bothering with compressing them first.

5GB should give roughly 10 CDs (most of the CDs I have are 45 to 60 minutes). This should last for a few days.

Does anyone know if I can actually rip the CD directly to iPod?
Does iPod look to the system as yet another hard drive? Seems like Firewire won't be a bottleneck. Now if I can find the CD-Reader operating at 40X or something like that, this should make a quick copy.

TIA.

Have you read "Apple Confidential" Joelongwood. It's a fascinating portrait of Apple's rise and you get an idea of just how much of a "pirate" Jobs really is.

Apple's site says you need OS 9.2.1 (or X, of course) to use iPod in the way they intend for you to. I guess there are always dozens of workarounds, though, or even one for windows like you all mentioned.

At first $400 sounded expensive, but you'd be paying $300 or so for a top-of-the-line MD recorder (probably more for the MZ-N1) and possibly some extras ($20 transformer?). Adding the possibility of uncompressed music to that, and I'm 80% sure that I'll get an iPod instead of a R909, MT770 etc. Now we'll have to see how good the phones amp is.

And if there's a smaller (thinner, I wish) iPod next year, that'll be the end of MD for me.

I keep hearing about PowerBooks appearing in Windows XP tv ads...I don't care for Win/Mac debates (I use what I want, you Donnatella), but it feels good to see your computer on TV.

If you mount the iPod as a FireWire drive, then the system sees it as a hard drive. You can then rip directly to the iPod. However, it is not clear if you can then "import" them into the iPod's playlists -- I would think so, but that hasn't been verified.

P.S. Leon, it's true -- I have seen at least three new Windows XP commercials with PowerBooks in them

Seems like the Mac is the weapon of choice in the entertainment industry. I guess the director thought it would be funny to put it in there.

Sara Jessica Parker's character in Sex in the City uses a tibook and before that a pismo.

Hello all;

In case anyone missed it, here the new faq on ipod.

http://www.apple.com/ipod/pdf/iPod_FAQ-a.pdf

(Don't ya think iMP would have been a neater name? Somebody must already have owned that for Apple to pass it up.)

My guess is that in the future, Apple has plans to add non-MP3 features to the iPod, so they didn't want a name that was MP-related.

That screen is pretty nice... add some color... video?

OK, here is a cool tidbit (one that will make PC users jealous

).

Besides all of the other great features the iPod has...

You can BOOT your Mac from it.

That's right... you can install a copy of the Mac OS and some utilities on it, and for a loss of about 100MB of storage space, VOILA -- you have an instant emergency boot drive in case you ever need it. You can even copy the OS installaters onto the iPod, and reinstall the OS from the iPod.

Man, is that cool or what? How many Mac people will now write it off as a business expense

Write-off city, McDef. And re the video issue: how much more onboard software would have been required to play Quicktime and mpegs movies? First thing my skeptic friend said was: "I'll buy one when it has a colour screen." Hmm. Of course the first thing my wife said was: "Forget it!" Gotta work on that... But now I beginning to wonder if the iPod isn't a wee bit scant in function and features. Like you said earlier no line out. Can I use it like a portable recorder without the software interface from a mac? And as to being beautiful for its austerity, in fact it's a near portal-less steel cube with only a firewire port and a headphone out. What?! The darn thing has less knobs than an Audio Research pre-amp! I needs me options! Oh well. Still love it. Just griping.

joelongwood: I know you're right.....but until I have enough money to get MY OWN comp - no Macs for me......besides, I'd rather have a Solaris machine ANYDAY!

Powerful..........and unique.

All in one.

SOLARIS SOLARIS SOLARIS!

(silence)

Erm.....sorry.......

Well, I contend that there is a good reason Apple named it "iPod" -- note that there is no reference to MP3s there. I think that speaks volumes for the future -- nice screen, 32MB RAM... can you say pictures and video?

coolvij, I would have agreed with you three years ago, when I was using Solaris daily. But now that X is out and has all the power and a good interface...

P.S. I found this nice picture of the iPod, a Sony MZ-R700, and a lighter side-by-side. They're all tiny:
