Anything better than the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 at its price range?

My primary use is for gaming, watching movies, listening to jazz, classical, and pop music. I think the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900 fits my need, but I just want to double check with the experts here on which route to go. Are you guys aware of anything better at that price range or I should just go with the Audio-Technica ATH-AD900?

Check out the reviews on the new AKG K550.

Sounds like they might work out well for you.
Personally, I like them more than the AT 900's
which I owned for about a year or so, and which
I liked quite a lot.

This one is closed, but soundstage is pretty good.

Take a look at beyer models, but you need a decent source. Where are you plugging your headphones to?

Let's see the AKG K550 is selling for $285-$300.
The ATH-AD900 is selling for $206 (thru amazon).
Something to think on.

So what source(s) do you plug your headphones into?

For immersive gaming, movies and pop music I'd stay far away from the AD900's. It lacks any sort of bass

Q701 checks off the immersive gaming, movies, jazz, and classical boxes.  I can't really say about pop music as I don't listen to it.

AD900, although the soundstage is great, loses out on immersion due to the thin sound with a lack of bass.

Q701 benefit more from a better source and AMP then AD900s.

If your gaming on PC, I'd recommend a soundcard with surround virtualization like Dolby Headphone, such as the Xonars.  For consoles, an Astro mixamp.

Haven't tried the AD900s, but from your description I'm thinking of Kenwood K1000 and/or Denon D2000. I know, both are closed, but they'd be my first picks for movies (I prefer the Kenwoods, they cost more though), and up there with the best for gaming and the like (there's some better options, but they usually have less bass response or some other flaw that shelves them for movies imho). Agree with the point on a good soundcard or similar device as well.

Heya,

Eh, I would put you on other headphones in general:

Hifiman HE-300 & HE-400
Denon D2000 & D5000
Beyer DT770, DT880, DT990
AKG K550 & Q701

Very best,

I'll be plugging this into the Fiio E10.
