on what gear? w/ the right tubes/(possibly discrete) opamps, you can get reggae bass to sound really good IME...w/ a very thick analog sound

I love the recording of "funky kingston" where Toots is giving it so hard and you can just hear the rawness of his voice. Another great voice that I don't think has been mentioned is YouTube - Jacob Miller - Tired Fe Lick Weed, 22-04-'78

he's more of a soul/ska singer to me, than reggae...

 
Definitely an element of truth in that, but it's also funny because Toots Hibbert actually coined the term "reggae".
