anyone else have a bad new years?

went to the party that is thrown at my friends house for all the kids from the local church as it was either that or sitting around the dinner table at home listening to my parents and aunts/uncles with some of the most boring chat ever.

In the end I'd have much preferred staying home with my headphones on and listening to some music.... but most of the young kids seemed to really enjoy themselves so I guess that was good for them.

I haven't drank in a year and a half, so I spent NYE this year much like I did last year. Played some World of Warcraft and piddle around on the computer for a bit. Watch Star Trek VIII: First Contact. Good flick! If you like Next Gen it is anyway.

Also listened to some Beethoven on my HD650's.

Are you familiar with physical forms of pleasure?

Honestly I thought I had a fantastic New Year's, but then again I'm a dork like that.

i dont set myself up for the pressure to have an especially good day on those kinda days, because the letdown can be sucky. instead i just walked the dog, put the kid to bed, chilled with the wifey commenting on how sad dick clark sounds post-stroke and what a lucky person seacrest is, and enjoyed some surround sound fireworks action from the TV and outside (i'm in NYC after all!)

I hear you. Best way to avoid the let-down is to not have any build-up.

I've had my share of lousy New Year's -- bad parties, not being with good friends, etc. -- mostly spending the night thinking I should be having more fun.

It's really a stupid/artificial "holiday". Nice to have time off from work, for those who can.

I'm with Jahn on this one: the key to New Year's Eve is to lower your expectations. If you break even for the night in terms of a good time, consider yourself lucky.

This year, we put the Little Monkey to bed, watched a movie, drank some champagne, and watched the ball drop from the comfort of our couch. Simple, quiet, fun.

But I do always get that damn Dan Fogelberg song in my head...

I stayed at home eating yellow noodles. Ended up having a massive stomachache (and ensuing uh.. you know).

My New YEars eve was OK, got to spend it with family as I mentioned in another thread.

But I had thrown my back out slightly (again) Saturday, so I was not comfy at all. And Saturday and Sunday mornings, I heard about 2 deaths: my brother-in-law's father, and my sister-in-law's mother. So while a good time was had overall, there was an undercurrent of discomfort and sadness behind it all.

Life does go on, but it sure sucks when one ends even if another has begun.

What I find happens is that my New Year is generally quite naff (although I never really expect much of it anyway) but then the next few days I get so many friends/family saying "happy new year" and telling me what fun they had with their significant other & friends and how much of a wonderful time.

That's when it really starts to stick in me that my time isn't so much fun. It's as though I find it hard to understand why most people I know seem to have a wonderful new year while mine pretty much blows.

Well, I guess I'm the lone drunkard here. My best girl (that's a) friend drove 4 hours to spend new years with me. We had a few drinks at my friends house at around 8. At around 10, my friend and I went to visit my buddy Matt who was the doorman at a guest-list only bar/private party where all the drinks were 100% free (the party was for the owner of the bar). At 11:15 or so, we went to this dance club to meet up with some other friends and shake our asses. We left the club around 3 and went to an after party. I got home around 4am or so.

The funny thing is that I was going to stay home if my friend wasn't driving down from Omaha.

Not bad, but nothing special. Worked a little, cleaned up around the house, and soldered a little. Then I cooked a nice dinner and fell asleep around 9. Woke up in time to pop the champagne at midnight and have a couple glasses, only to fall asleep shortly after. I've been working a lot lately, and am tired. But not a bad night at all.

My worst New Year's was getting stuck with a friend who had recently bought into the Amway thing and was pretty excited about it. I just let him keep talking about the program while I plowed through a 12 pack. Wasn't fun. I'm still friends with him, but he's no longer selling.
