Stumbling towards enlightenment
(Formerly known as kayandjohn.)
I have a couple of DAPs that mention having balanced output, yet 1) balanced output sounds the same volume as single-ended output, and 2) the sound (e.g., spaciousness, frequency) is identical from either output.
I fear that the "balanced" output of these DAPs is simply an XLR or 2.5mm plug wired in single-ended configuration but using a connector that matches that of balanced headphones.
Is there a simple test to see whether an amp or DAC's output is truly balanced? For example, if single ended uses a common ground and balanced uses separate grounds, one might think that the grounds of a single ended output wired to connect to a balanced cable might have zero resistance between right and left channel, while truly balanced would have some higher resistance between left and right ground connections.
Any ideas? Thanks!
