Anime losers meet headphone geeks!

Why do people assume that the reason people hate something is cause it's mainstream or popular? That may be true in some cases, but not all. Taking some of us as fools already shows the elitism in the fans. You're not special cause you like anime! You're not part of some secret society or anything. You're just like everybody else, so live with it.

Ok, but let's be fair here. If I were to go to, say, Japan, I bet I'd get the same kind of responses.

Also, lots of Asian people seem to get upset/insulted if you can't tell where they're from. "How could you think I'm Vietnamese? I'm Laotian, dumbass." In Laos, no one would be able to tell if my background is Irish, English, German, Swedish, Dutch or whatever

I know that. But remember, America isn't Japan. We're supposed more knowledgable about differences between cultures/races in the great us of a. We have much face-to-face experience w/ different peoples compared to japan and china and stuff which primarily consist of their own kind. Also, I don't care if someone doesn't know my where I'm from. But at least acknowledge it when I tell them. I've told people my race and they still call me chinese or something. "Asian" would be fine. I've actually had people tell me I was *wrong* when I said I'm not what they thought. Also, I wouldn't continue to call a german guy british (if he told me beforehand), but I would call him european.

Soon you will not be allowed to listen to a band because you don't come from the Bands town.

Okay, that's a little different than this. No one cares if someone like asian/black/white media and culture, just realize that YOU AREN'T ONE OF THEM. You've never been in our shoes, and vice versa. So when people say they relate to asian culture or black culture but are obviously have no real f**kin" idea, it's gets annoying.

Ah, this thread is great. I've got a friend who loves anime/mangas. I taunt him to no end. I wouldn't call him a fanboy, and he hasn't dressed up in a giant duck costume (yet), but it's still weird. Otherwise normal people going wa-wa over oddly drawn characters with oversized eyes, technicolor hair, and usually, for the females, an insanely out of proportion chest. (not that that's a bad thing... but I digress)

Give me good 'ol Warner Bros/Hanna Barbera any day. Or The Simpsons.

Ah, young master, now you learn the real truth behind fads. First: all adore something new and crave to be part of it. Then, once it has become established, it becomes uncool to be part of it. This is the way of the world and fads. It always has been, and shall always be. Before you chide those who insult anime, ask yourself, do you wear a leisure suit and listen to disco? Ah, I thought not. Go in peace, Fad-san.

Comedy answer: "But Master, does not the fire need the water too? Does not the mountain need the storm? Does not your scrotum need kicking?" -Beavis

Real answer: Considering how I have no exposure to disco, and thus don't have a well-informed opinion of it, I'd say the analogy is a bit off. I know the fad lifecycle, and was just commenting on the particular stage it had reached here, so your point was...

Though "Fad-san" was amusing.

This movie looked pretty, but was as dull as dishwater.

Wow. That's the first time I've ever heard anybody reacting to that movie w/ anything other than sadness or anger.

To be completely honest, it's more the many American Anime fans I can't stand (admittedly, not all of them). My view on anime fans has been greatly influenced by the ANIME AND MANGA CLUB from high school.

See, I never did understand this sort of thinking. Partly because, unless pressed, the reason given is always the anime w/ no mention of the obsessed fans. Other part is you're potentially denying yourself some good experiences for a reason that is at most marginally related to the actual subject. Really, would you not listen to a particular band just because of the groupies? And, as somebody pointed out earlier, those people aren't even cosplaying anime characters.

just for fun i typed "anime body pillow" into google and got a ton of disturbing hits. but here is one that isn't even anime, that i found most disturbing...

Yeah, the Japanese have some really weird stuff. There's also a counterpart to that thing, for the ladies.

And I wasn't really pointing that comment about fads to you, dhwilkin. You just happened to provide the springboard for yet another of my head-fi rants. If a subject tickles my poison pen, off I go -- no matter who might have help provoke it. And I already had ill feelings about anime. Nothing personal.

Ah, alright, gotcha. I also just couldn't pass up the opportunity to use a good Beavis quote.

Actually, that probably just means they're a perfectionist. I know I am... I think people sound stupid when they mispronounce stuff. Anyways, it's something that's not necessarily tied into their association with Japanese stuff.

And why the hell would you pride yourself in being called otaku? I'm a geek! I'm special!

Why not? Love what you are, screw what other people think.

nice selective response to my post....

On another note, I have to admit that a lot of what Wodgy said makes sense (thanks for actually presenting arguments btw, not "anime sux"
tongue.gif
) For whatever reason, I don't really agree with his reasons, but maybe that's just because i'm still a kid
biggrin.gif
Or because stuff like that doesn't really bother me (I like dead baby jokes and find it funny to talk about gross stuff around stiff people) But if you think about it, similar sorts of arguments can be applied to American shows. Steppenwolf mentioned The Simpsons... while I think that show is moderately funny, I find the animation attrocious. I was drawing higher quality stuff when I was 10. I think a lot of American art loses value because of how simplistic and childish the drawing style is. The thing I enjoy about Anime is it's a little more varied and unpredictable. Some use blue hair and over-sized chests, some don't. Some have the huge eyes, some don't. I find American TV animation can sometimes be much more cut-and-dried. Granted, these are silly generalizations, but I hope i'm still making some sense
biggrin.gif

It's really that each good quality anime show has it's own "feel" because they all have specially designed music, drawing styles, etc. The focus is more on the entire package.. visual, emotion, mental, aural... instead of just "the storyline" or "the punchline"

And just as an aside...what's wrong with schoolgirls and guns???
biggrin.gif
Sure it's kinda porny and silly, but that's the point. The Japanese have a lot of fun with their television, even the high-quality deep & meaningful stuff. I mean, why not? Violence, sex, AND philosophy? w00t.

Exactly. When was the last time that an American show made you go "Wooooaaahh..." like Lain or Evangelion? In fact i've mostly stopped watching American movies these days. What ever happened to quality control? Oh, that's right, it's against the rules of Mighty Corporate America.
tongue.gif
Pretty much the only new films from the US I enjoy are comedies. At least they're short and limited enough in scope that they can still be good. Zoolander, I Heart Huckabees, Anchorman... good times. I find most "serious" movies nowadays to be lacking, however. I leave the theater craving more everytime. That's not good... I want to finish a movie feeling satisfied. My theory is that it's just a side-effect of the general lowering of standards in this country. Far be it for movies to be made for intelligent or tasteful people. Nah, just make something that earns a buck and keeps the mighty gears churning. Another phenomenon is directors like Wes Anderson, making movies to get off on their own grandeiour. It's like when they make the movie, they're thinking, "If the viewers are as cool as ME, they'll get all these obscure inside jokes. Yay!" I don't have a problem with eccentricity, but taken to the extreme like in The Life Aquatic, it begins to simply erode the humour and value of the film. Movies should not be defined by their awkward silences.

Typical brainless American boy viewpoint. "I don't like anything that makes me think or feel or requires any attention span whatsoever, I just wanna see BLOOD and BOOBIES!"
