The AD8656 has more output current so it's better suited for driving headphones. I'm going to guess that the high impedance coupled with the low output current are the cause. I listened to my HD800 directly from my Gamma2 and I agree, sounds surprisingly decent given it's straight out from a DAC.

I used to have the y2 + M^3/Sigma-11 combo. I've since sold the M^3, but sometimes regret doing so. It was an excellent pairing. I never tried the DT880 through that setup though, only the cans listed in my profile.

I'd love to hear impressions of the gamma2 with an m^3.  I was considering trying building it as my first real DIY project.

The gamma2 has been excellent so far.  So much clarity across the spectrum, and spaciousness compared to my entry level udac.  Really happy with it so far.

I don't subscribe to some magical synergy between various components, so take from this what you will......

The Gamma2 is a great DAC. The M3 is a great amp. Putting them together is not going to make either one or both suddenly seem awful.

As someone who has owned both the Gamma2 and M^3 at the same time, it is indeed a very nice combo.  Did not try the DT880s on it though.

Just wanted to quickly update the thread. I have a Buffalo 32s now ($1500 in parts) and you'd be surprised at how close the y2 is. This DAC is a huge bargain at its asking price.
