Am I the only one who thinks that Justin Timberlake absolutely **SUCKS?**

Well, maybe not as bad as if William Hung did the vocals. The point is, why should mediocrity be rewarded? As a singer with the same voice and average looks and sex appeal, Justin Timberlake would get about as far as your local Karaoke bar. And he wouldn't be the best singer there.

McDonald's makes hamburgers, and millions of people love them. You could not pay me to put that garbage in my mouth. Not when I can get a real burger from my local mom-n-pop joint. For a tiny bit more money.

However you are wrong in your opinion of him - I keep hearing some of the sharpest written, produced and performed pop out there, and this is no small feat to do this with any credibility. Part of the success has to be due to Timbaland as producer, who can be relied on to serve up sharp and mildly innovative sounding music of course, but Timberlake's performance shows superior musicality as well. I may prefer the likes of Deerhoof to listen to rather than radio friendly pop like this, but I am certainly not going to put down Justin Timberlake, who quite obviously has talent to spare.

It's really all about THE BEAT. Timbaland knows how to create catchy beats and hooks. Combine that with a pretty face and you have a marketable product. It's that simple. There's nothing special about Justin Timberlakes voice or talent, but you combine his looks and Timbaland's beats and you have a synergy, so to speak. Together, they make music that is easy to dance to. And that caters to a lot of teens, 20's, and sometimes 30 year olds. My gf is prime example. *shakes head*

Yes, but is a "marketable product" worth settling for? If I accept the logic of your argument, then The Bay City Rollers are indistinguishable from the Beatles, and Bon Jovi is indistinguishable from Springsteen.

Why has marketing potential become the only test of what we get to hear?

Consider that after the Beatles, George Martin's most successful production client was America -- he produced most of their big, bland hits. Are we to acquiese to a market mentality that sees no distinction between "Hey Jude" and "Tin Man?" I don't really think the suits care one way or another.

Make no mistake -- the recording industry is not dying (die faster! die faster! die faster!) because of illegal downloads. It's because they don't look for, or promote talent. They look for bland, malleable mediocrity that they can mold into a generic product, and then apply their standard marketing treatment. Easy, predictable, safe. The accountants love it. The shareholders love it. And now they are choking on it.

I've no opinion of his singing, but the man is hot.

Really? Looks just average to me. Lots of guys around that make him look like dog food.

I can't believe this is page 3 of this thread - do I have to take some of the blame?

I beg forgiveness on the graves of Marvin and Otis - Justin sucks - there I said it. R'n'B has been permanently polluted - where is Prince when we need him, rather than this heinous tenth rate ripoff?

There - can we all stop now?

Having lived through the 60s and 70s, I border on obsession with the whoring of the music industry. I do think prostitution is a problem, but I don't give much thought to individual hookers. Timberlake is just one of the girls in the stable. Might as well be Michael Boltin or 50 Cent.

Don't care about them individually, but when you sum the effect they have on the world, it's hard not to dwell on the issue.

Argueably the best pop artist of modern day. Name one other person who can stand up to him? He's a modern day Michael Jackson....sans the kiddy stuff.

His lyrics are great, and Timbaland as his Producer = win.
