Am I the only one who thinks that Justin Timberlake absolutely **SUCKS?**

Given the amount of crap music made these days, I try not to think too much about any one of them for fear that my head will implode while I am thinking of their popularity and the absurd amounts of money these marketing and record labels throw at these jokers.

Short answer - nope, you're not alone in this.

I don't particularly like his voice or music, but not long ago I was sent a link to the SNL "D**k in a box" video on YouTube, that was really hillarious. His voice at the end reminded me somewhat of Yamiroquai's, even though it's clearly another voice.

i hate pop music, but as far as pop goes timberlake is pretty cool. that said, i've never heard one of his albums; but what i have heard has been not too terrible. he seems to me to be a person who could branch out and do quality music if he wanted, but instead he decided to do generic pop to reel in the cash

It sure does tell me something. It tells me that, for all his obvious talent, Timbaland either has no taste or his primary interest is in making money. I defy anyone to listen to Timberlake next to any decent pop singer and say with a straight face that this kid has a professional quality singing voice. He simply does not. Go to any Karaoke bar on a Friday night, and you will hear someone do a far better Michael Jackson impression than the one that Timberlake has taken to the bank.

And my opinion of Timbaland (or at least of the product he hawks) is further eroded by that horrific single he did with Nelly Furtado. Ludicrously trite lyrics, a plodding rap from Timbaland (no one has ever called him a good MC as far as I know) and a tasteless, clumsy vocal from Furtado.

While Timberlake certainly isnt the pinnacle of currently recorded music, I dont really have a problem with him. He is a pretty funny guy, and he is aware that he is making throwaway pop music.

It is the people who are pretending to be something they are not that really bother me, and worse the people who pretend be greater than they are. I could (and have on occasion) list a dozens acts that are popular with quite a few people on headfi that I find infinitely more reprehensible.

Which remains my point as well - he puts out good disposable pop. Timberlake is certainly not talentless, and his long apprenticeship in the music industry shows in his ability as an overall entertainer. His voice is OK in a Michael Jackson imitative sort of way, and certainly not as bad as some of the more extreme statements made. His game is definitely lifted by his proximity to Timbaland, lending him most of his sharpness of sound, but it is to Timberlake's credit that he can carry it off so well.

Again not particularly my kind of music, but enjoyable enough for what it is. Timberlake obviously sounds great on the dance floor, whereas Andrew Bird mentioned in your signature would wreck the party!

Music always goes through cycles, much like fashions, drugs, culture, unfortunately were in a dark time in music, not only in pop, but other genres, it'll come around though. I think most "pop" music pretty much sucks. I also believe in the difference of an "artist" vs. "performer". Look at hardcore punk in the early 80s, versus now, look at pop music now compared to disco in the 70s, its very similar, all about junk, and bling, and what not. Disco couldn't evolve, much like some (not all) hip hoppish/pop music, it hasn't evolved, changed or really developed any real content. It feels pretty empty, lacking depth and insight. Not all music has to have a message, sometimes it's just nice to listen to something that just sounds good. At the same time, the physical garbage we produced needs to be reduced as much as the sound garbage we produce. Oh, yeah, Justin Timberlake sucks.

Unless you're an animal on heat, no, you're not missing anything.

Well, let's review. After the success of her first album, she branched out into all sorts of new musical territory for her second. An intelligent, ambitious record.

And it tanked commercially. It seems that the marketing morons at the major labels are incapable of adapting to an artist that changes or grows in any way.

Why should they, after they've gone to all that trouble to corrupt the radio biz and deliberately destroy independant CD shops?

So she regroups and comes up with the God-AWFUL "Promiscuous" single. Lyrics reminiscent of the P*ssycat Dolls, an embarrassing attempt at a "street" accent in her vocal, and, oh yeah, slick production by possibly the best (and most cynical) producer around.

Can you say "CHA-CHING!!?"

It really depends on whether you want to make music or sell records. You really can't do both.

Yep, Timbaland makes great dance tracks (and I say that without irony). But imagine those same tracks with, say, Faith Evans or Marc Anthony or Ne-Yo or Robin Thicke handling the vocals. Quite a different proposition, wouldn't you say?
