Im in the market for a new set of headphones. I just got a job at a radio station which means I need a set of cans that are all around good for spoken voice, and Hot AC type music. these are going to be connected to a serious amplifier at work, and Im looking to spend under 250 dollars. I was looking at the AKG 701's, senn 650/600's, the grado rs-1's, and the beyer 880's. Whats going to be be my best choice for all around crisp sound, or what are some good choices that I havent looked into yet? thank you

DT880's aren't too good for spoken voice IMO.

AKG K240's seemed to be used quite alot at radio stations and studio's... Don't know how good they are though.

It'll undoubtedly need to be a closed headphone. All those you list are open; they leak sound to the outside world.

x2. On top of that, I have never seen an Rs-1 for less than 500, even used. And +1 for the 240s.

I'd go closed, especially if you're using them live/on-air where you've got a mic in your face

that kills the K701's, HD 650's and HD 600's, RS-1's, and DT-880's right there

you might consider the closed AKG's, such as the K271's
closed Sennheisers such as the HD280 or HD380 Pro's
M-Audio's closed Q40's are also good picks

I'd avoid anything from Denon, due to build quality (that'd also have me passing on RS-1's (also, RS-1's blow your budget by about 3x))

could also try the Beyer DT770 pro (should be closed as the DT 770 is)

and I'm sure theres other options

EDIT
in the 9 minutes it took me to write this, a few more posts have come up, talking about closed and the RS-1 point, *sigh*
basically "what he said"

I would think the HD-25 1-II would be a shoe-in, but I'm newbish.

Just get standard studio closed phones, like the MDR-V6, HD280, or K240. There's no need to spend that much on what basically amount to regular work phones.

X3 on the closed cans. For that type of application, sound isolation is really important.

You really cant go wrong with the AKG K271 or the Sennheisers. Its all preference from there really.

I would say quite the contrary regarding the dt880. Another example of people hearing things differently. But I would probably vote for HD600 in this case.

The Sony MDR-V6 is commonly used for studio work. I had a pair for years and loved them; then I came here. Still, they're not bad for the price and you'll find them at radio stations everywhere. They'll turn up as low as $50 refurbished occasionally, too.

Another professional headphone you might be interested in is the Sony MDR-7509HD. They run around $200 and while I don't know what they sound like, I bought a pair yesterday. I like Sony's headphones, so I hope these will be good, too.

knew I was forgetting a ~$150 closed 'phone along with the Q40 and etc

the MDR V6 would be a good call
theres also a more expensive sony pro, CD900ST, which do fit the budget

might also consider the AT PRO700's (know nothing about them, but I'd put them on the list of things to go audition along with the CD900ST, MDR V6, HD280, K271, etc (any and all of those))

just check out something like guitar center, they should have a lot of closed studio 'phones to test

EDIT
@ erik
is CD900ST = 7509?
just as MDR V6 = 7506?

Look at Audio Tehnica studio monitors like the M40fs or M50.
They have great build quality, but can clamp a bit.
The HD280 sounds good, and they are more comftorble if you have to wear them for a longer period of time.
