just wanna say again that this can was supposedly designed for pro-audio use. its primarily a tool for sound engineers.

being an efficient can that is easy to drive, it can be plugged into a mixing console or a portable dap and perform.

talk of this can requiring system matching and 300 hours of burn-in to perform optimally sounds like audiophoolery to me.

I supposed there is still no reported case successfully modifying k812 into balanced?

I still don't think its worth the effort (plus most likely ruining the nice design): they already project a very wide stage and they definitely don't need the power.

akg makes audio products (including headphones) for the professional and "lifestyle" markets actually. they're separate and distinct market segments - folks who want cans for personal listening aren't necessarily into studio and broadcast microphones for example. the k812 is marketed as a pro audio product. but yeah i'm sure that akg isn't fussed over who buys it.

Experimented K812 with iPod 5.5 and sound is great with "small speakers" EQ. Nice bass and enjoyable to listen to even at higher volumes (treble is controlled). Using double helix cable.

On a side note, K812 doesn't sound good with AK100 ii with EQ off. K812 didn't sound that good with Chord Hugo connected to Macbook pro too.

Well it seems that all the price/sound quality bashing of the K812 compared to the HD800 has paid off - at least in Hong Kong.  K812 is now going for about USD1100 (some shop is even doing a Xmas promo by throwing in an aftermarket cable) while the HD800 still retails for USD1550 with no discounts due to its popularity amongst the audiophile community.   I've been out of the over ear flagship game for a long time now (plus I'm one of those people who prefer the T1 over the HD800), but that 30% price difference and from what I've gather about the K812 seems to make this a deal worth looking into (I do have a soft spot for AKG as my first high end can was the K701), might head over to some shops and give them a good listen.  :D

To be honest, even if the price tags were reversed I'd still go for the K812 any day. The HD800 are possibly my least used over ear phones.

Am waiting for my Fitz-improved Bada PH-12 to come back from the shop, refitted with Black Gate caps.
The AKG K812 pair extremely well with the Bada (it's a hybrid using 3x 6SN7).
Although I have not yet audioned the HD800, the K812 are the best dynamic headphones I have heard/owned to date.

That's exactly the way I feel about the vastly underrated Martin Logan Mikros 90 and the vastly overrated KEF M500 portables.  To my ears the MLs easily outperform the KEFs on practically every front, yet the KEFs remain the more popular and the more expensive.
Sounds like a sweet deal for the K812s right now!  They are still retailing for about &1400-$1500 in most places in the US, although they are only $1200 through Massdrop.
