Is this a commonly belief? I tried the Audio Technica ATH-A900 and thought they might have had a slight edge on the AKG K550, but they were both brand new and I only listened for a short while. Any thoughts? Sealed headphone for bluegrass and gaming (opposites, i know)?

No, they are a good buy at $300 but not worth it for $150.

well shoot, im stumped now. hahaha

so i should just go for it? how versatile are they? I am looking for a headphone for progressive bluegrass, acoustic music, and video games. will this headphone suit well to bring out the details of the instrumentation of a bluegrass group?

In my opinion, AKG K550 is one of the best close sealed headphones at $300 price range.
It is less bassy comparing the ATH-M50 or ATH-Pro700MK2 or Beats Pro but has a better separation, wider sound stage and very good mids & high.

i am comparing the k550 to srh940. and the latter winns in everything except microdetail resolution. soundstage has more depth ans overall sound is smoother. but k550 is still a good phone in its price range.

That's my opinion too...but I could not get them to fit right (I bent the headband every which way and I still could not get a good seal).   I don't know what the engineers who designed this headphone were thinking.  I don't think there is a person alive with a head big enough to need the 550s when they are fully extended...but many have reported that even at the smallest setting the headphones were too big (myself included).

I hope they go back to the drawing board and release a version for mere mortals.
