AKG K272 too fragile or flawed design?

Once upon a time I had a pair of K271S and never had a breakage problem with them - but sold them because their sound was below par for me (kept k240s a lot longer). Even then, their lack of bass was immeasurably aided by a Portaphile.

When I bought my pair of AKG 271s used it was missing the left side marker. However, it doesn't seem to affect the fit of the headphone for me and it has been rock solid ever since. My guess is that the previous owner must have done something silly to get it to break off.
