AKG K272 too fragile or flawed design?

I bought my K272s back in Nov 09. Upon putting them on the first time, a little piece of plastic broke off and I noticed that one of the plastic plates that indicate left and right had broken off.

I immediately brought it back to the store for an exchange. Since then, I've been extra careful when putting on and taking off the headphones.

Fast forward to today, the same thing happened at work and it's been less than 3 months since owning these. Upon closer inspection of the broken piece, it looks like the plastic is quite fragile and I would assume there's quite a bit of stress for such a small area.

I was wondering if any other K272 owners have the same problem and whether it's worth contacting AKG about getting replacement parts. Btw, I certainly don't have an unusually large head. I think I wear a 7 1/4 sized new era cap. Seriously, if this keeps up, maybe I should just take the "L" plate off and not have to worry about them breaking off all the time?

The left side broke as well. And I guess from a lack of replies, mayb I am the only one with the broken plates?

So far, I've heard nothing from the AKG either after emailing them for parts.

I had 142 HD, and I think it has pretty much the exact design around that point. I didn´t have any problems during the time I owned them. And I even twisted them around a bit... xD So most likely it´s an uncommon issue you´re having there.

I had four AKG headphones in my life mostly the 240's models and the vinyl headband will break or split in time. Hopefully my Denon 2000 will last longer.

I have the K271 MKII which is the studio version of this, and I treat it the worst out of all the headphones that I have... it's frequently tossed carelessly onto hard surfaces, bent (to loosen the grip out), headband stretched (I have the same size head as you) and otherwise not babied at all. And it remains flawless! And those button seem perfectly secure. You've probably just run into some bad luck... if you still want assurance, perhaps ask if you can exchange it for the K271 instead of the 272... maybe studio versions are built with better durability in mind (just conjecture here, though).

Nope. No problems with mine.

I'm really rough with my set. They're 2 years old and I've dropped them from my table before. Everything's still attached.

Kind of surprised to see that happening, they are probably the toughest phones I owned (makes sense as they are designed to take a heavy abuse in studios), use mine for 6 years in office environment. But I have 271S, may be consumer HD series is built to different standards.

Thanks for the input everyone, it's reassuring to know that I am the only one.

Just hoping that AKG will respond soon for some replacement parts. Otherwise, this will turn into a rant post about customer bad service.

I brought it into Long and McQuade and one of the guys there believe the plastic used on the parts in question might have been from a bad batch.

The problem now is that I bought them from Kingsound in Hong Kong while I was vacation and of course, our Canadian distributor only provides warranty support for AKG products purchased in Canada. I always thought we lived in a global economy here. Anyhow, I guess I'll have to pay for these parts, which is a bit disappointing.

As for the 272HDs, I really like the sound. Before making my decision, I tried it against the 271 MkII and I preferred the slightly fuller body sound which I didn't quite understand as I heard that they have the exact same specs minus the removable cable. The way how I selected my headset was based on a blind ear test where the sales ppl helped me cycle through a bunch of headsets that I was interested in while I kept my eyes shut.

After the purchase, I also tried out some low end Grados. The open cans sounded refreshing and I am now interested in the K701s for home use. Of course, I am going to hold off until I get this warranty issue resolved.

A quick update for closure. AKG Vienna sent me the missing parts via express shipping. The K272s feel pretty solid now. Despite the broken parts, a fantastic experience with AKG headoffice.

The automatic cutoff in my pair broke in less than one month, but it was a useless feature to me anyways, so it's no loss.
