I just finished converting my lovely AKG K240 Studio headphones from standard 3-wire single end to 4-wire balanced mode. It's pretty easy to replace the headphone jack's Male 3-pin Mini XLR jack with a Male 4-pin Mini XLR jack. For you K701 owners your stock headphone cable is a 4-wire so all you need to do to convert it is to cut off the TRS single end stereo plug and solder on a Male 4-Pin XLR connector.

The details of the mod are here: http://robrobinette.com/HeadphoneMods.htm The web page also details the construction of the proper headphone cable and adapters.

Surprised no one commented yet! A lot of people end up kinda of sticking with their list of threads.

These guides are very very well done. The pictures are clear and the labels are just perfectly done to help a novice.

To help the community, I might suggest you add in your title something like "also works for K702, Q701, and K712". The housing mechanics are all identical with these headphones, and this is great mod for those headphones.

Do you need to use a specific type of 4-pin mini-XLR or could I use either of the ones linked below?

I did not notice the issue with the first link, thanks pointing it out. Not sure if the picture or the description is wrong but I don't really want to find out :)

For now I will go with the TA4ML since both the picture and description match, thanks @robrob.
