There are many cases where a lower tier and middle tier could be the same thing, but with cosmetic or comfort improvements. I often skip the middle.  It's not always like that though, and yeah, sometimes the sound is changed.
 
Although technically the K167 is middle tier haha T____T

I have a k702. Basically the main difference is that the k167 has way more bass punch and impact, mids a but further back, and way less soundstage. Treble is pretty similar on them. As far as size k702 are way bigger - tiestos are easily portable

Okay, bit by bit I've finally made my way through this whole thread to date. I'd be curious to hear more impressions with hard rock, metal, alternative, etc. I'm guessing the sub-bass makes for a great kick drum, and the detailed highs are probably good for cymbal strikes etc. What about vocals and guitars?  Are they aggressive and energetic enough for electric guitars and snare strikes and so on? What about bass guitar lines typical to these genres--do they get lost in the mid-bass/lower-midrange dip, or are they buried behind drum kicks or other instruments? Other impressions or thoughts? Other cans under say $350-400 that would be a better choice for these genres where PRaT is king? 
 
My main frame of reference is a pair of HD-25's which are quite enjoyable for these rock genres but can be a bit fatiguing at times.
 
Miow,  do you have access to an iPhone/iPod and LOD you could try with your C421/2227 and the K167's to see how well they do without Sony's ClearBass?

Yes, I got a SONY A865 with LOD to the C421 and in this case Clear Bass will work the same way because it's EQ, it's not hardware based. But the LOD gives more bass than the headphone out, so Clear Bass is not necessary.
 
Metal is one of my prefered genres with the K167's. Just brilliant a tiny bit EQ'ed in the mids though to bring them more forward.

Yea those were good but didn't satisfy my bass needs and the highs were tiiiny bit too sparkly/forward but technically very good quality sound for the price.

Yeah, a bit bass light compared to Q40, but stupidly good detail and instrument separation.

Yes, these excel in musicianship, and detail. Def needs more midbass. It almost, for me, gets to the harsh point, but doesn't.
I really like them. They are plenty comfy and I prefer their sound to the MDR 1r but I do prefer the detachable cable and a little more durability of the MDR 1r even though they're plastic too. Their comfort is better as well, but they squeak and it annoys me. The k167 make no noises at all.

If it's Metal that you like (Progressive, etc), just go for them, you won't regret. You might want to EQ mids just a bit though.
