Total unnatural. I was very dissapointed, when I tried the D2000. I would prefer the HD600 or HD650 instead, but I like the K601 sound better. The K601 in contrast to the D2000 delivers a much more realistic sound. This is often what I like. For bad recordings, 128er MP3 or just when I'm in the mood I switch to the MS1 instead of the K601. IMO there is no single best headphone and the combination K601/MS1 is not too expensive, but yet delivers a very high quality, yet fun sound. IMO both sound fine without a headphone preamp, but both benefit from it -- maybe the K601 a tad more.

Um...i had a good listen with AKG k601, Senn HD600,650 and own Denon D2000, had Sennheiser HD595. I will say the HD595 is bassier than D2000, plus a smaller soundstage and slightly less detail, but more comfortable.
K601 sounds really great to my ear, detail and the soundstage is just as good as Denon. However; it surely lack bass compare to the Senn or Denon. Personally find the HD600 and HD650 are pretty dark, especially the hd650, and the sound isn't that revealing to me, but it is really relaxing and pleasant, especially when you just get off work and want to sit there, relax with music, it does the job really well. As for the Denon d2000, it gets sweaty after 5hrs on my ears, but it has a good detail and soundstage, i find the bass is just right for my orchestra.

K601 was amped with Darkvoice
Denon D2000, Senn HD595 amped with Lyrix total and Boa
Senn HD600 & HD650, unknown, listened to it in a store, didn't have a chance to find out what amp it was using.

Personal Preference: K601 = Denon D2000 > Senn HD600 > HD595 > HD650
K601 and D2000 are more or less the same, depends on the music being played, probably towards the D2000 a little more. HD595 > HD650, reason is that the HD650 clamps my head a bit hard, no doubt hd650 wins in every other way against the hd595, there is just something i like hd595 a bit more.

Hope it helps!

what I may do is buy the K601 now and aim to buy an amp in the future.

I do prefer a more natural sound tbh, are you guys sure the K601 will run off my audigy OK?

EDIT: out of interest, how do headphone amps connect to Stereo amps ( I have a cambridge A5) or my pc

i'm having a hard time believing that the 595 is bassier than the d2000. obviously everyone hears things differently and i respect your opinion, but the overwhelming impression of these phones is that the 595 lacks bass and the d2000 can have an overblown, "tubby" bass response. i've never heard the d2000, but having previously owned the 595, i can join the crowd by stating my dislike for their low end. i don't necessarily think they are an unenjoyable headphone, but for those that are seeking a more prominent bass response, i would look elsewhere. otherwise, it looks as though you like the d2000 and i'm thinking of getting one myself.

sorry to reserect this thread -but-

I'm seraching for a natural, clean, crisp, laid back sound that's good for classical, jazz, and soft vocals, as well as the odd bit of rock a techno.

The Denon's don't appear to be my type of can, from reading reviews, they sound a little to rock orientated, and not to great for jazz/classical.
Would I be making a bad descision going for the 601's?

Also how do the 601's compare to the 701's?

whatever can will not have an amp yet, however I have not ruled out purchasing one in the future, I want to buy the can with the most potential.

Thanks

As a side note, has anybody listened to Dark side of the moon on a 601/701? How does it sound? :p

there is very little material regarding general information on the 601's. Will audigy should be able to drive 120ohms to a reasonable volume? I know an amp will add more detail, but i can upgrade later.

Nice thread.
I expect the D2000 and the K601 to arrive this or next week.
And of course I will compare them.
However, my main issue with headphones is sibilance. So for me, that's the first thing to compare.

I've owned both the 601 and the 2000. Two completely different beasts, wide soundstage and very good with voices the 601, a little bit bassy but more enjoyable then 601, the 2000. My vote goes to the 2000, the Akg is not a cans good for all kinds of music, the Denons are the cans that are more similar to my favourite cans, Sony cd 3000. I've sold the 2000 only in order to buy the 5000, a little bit better then 2000 but IMHO the 2000 is one or probably the best buy on the market.

also...the d2k's have a significantly higher price.

On the contrary, once you get that bass under control I find the D2000 to be a relaxed and natural sounding headphone. I think they do well for those two genres.

I used the D2000 for some time and the one characteristic that stands out is indeed the amount of bass and weight of sound. It is worth mentioning the highs are also there. In my experience it does suit more types of music in general and if this is the type of listening that you would use it for, you would have more fun with it. Having said that, as i listen to classical more than any type of music and want what's best for it, i quickly preferred the Beyer DT880 over it (just sharing my experience), which was clearly more resolving and balanced (not as much bass though).

Same case for the 601's which in my short experience with it so far (using the Beta22 - so power is not an issue), i even preferred over the 701. For me the 601's midrange was its strength making the 701 and D2000 sound recessed or hollow in the middle. So vocals and jazz are also excellent but im not sure about rock, alternative and pop. I would characterize 601's sound to be similar to british speakers (epos, harbeth or spendor) and full range single drivers (lowthers, fostex) which makes it consistent with those who find it coherent. The D2000 would sound like Focal or Dynaudio. YMMV.
