which should I go for?

I listen to a lot of smooth vocal jazz type music, (i.e Jamie Cullum), a fair bit of electronica ( moby, pendulum etc ) and a fair bit of rock, modern and classical.

I am looking for a clean sounding headphone with good bass yet good clean highs.

i will be using my Audigy 2 ZS.

All the AKG cans I tried, did not have the bass of the D2000 -- if you like realistic bass like I do.

And the mids and highs are also just fine on the Denons.

The Denon should do you just fine for the music you listen to!

But, to be honest, I've only direct experience with the AKG K501 and K701, both of which I enjoyed: the K501 appreciably more. The D2000 deliver more bass (sometimes, depending on the recording, more bass than you think you need) than either the K501 or the K701. In addition, the D2000 are arguably more balanced and certainly more coherent than the K701 (but not as amazingly coherent as the K501--which is why I like the K501 so, so much). How the D2000 will stack up against the K601, I can only guess (e.g. that the Denon will at least surpass the K601 in absolute bass output and who knows what else).

The D2000 are very engaging and versatile headphones, IMHE. Knowing what I know now--which, admittedly isn't a whole lot--and having to choose the better all-rounder between the Denon and either of the AKGs I mentioned, I'd give the D2000 the nod.

: )

For rock and pop, I guess the D2000 will be great.

But i haven't tried the k601 so i can't really compare it

One thing to note is that you need a good rig to utilize the k601.

Interesting. Since you and I seem to have close to the same tastes in headphones I am going to have to give the Denons a try.

how about the sen 595's?

they're quite a bit cheaper, how would they compare to the D2000's?

if the k601 won't have enough bass, i imagine the 595's would be disappointing in that department as well. i was always seeking a more prominent low end with the 595 and never got it...had to move on.

Well its hard, because everyone reacts on your jazz/electronical department. As you can see in my sig, I love the K601 and choose it above about anything for classical music. But only for classical music. For jazz music I prefer grado's, and for modern/electronical I prefer my AKG240's.

think i'm gonna go for the d2000's

by the sound of it, they have strong bass, slightly recsessed mids, and nice detailed highs. Am I correct?

Does anyone know where I can get them cheapest in the UK?

I own the K601 and MS1. I strongly advice not to buy the D2000 without hearing it first. I also read the many positive critics, but for me it would never be the headphone -- way to bassy IMO. Total unnatural. I was very dissapointed, when I tried the D2000. I would prefer the HD600 or HD650 instead, but I like the K601 sound better. The K601 in contrast to the D2000 delivers a much more realistic sound. This is often what I like. For bad recordings, 128er MP3 or just when I'm in the mood I switch to the MS1 instead of the K601. IMO there is no single best headphone and the combination K601/MS1 is not too expensive, but yet delivers a very high quality, yet fun sound. IMO both sound fine without a headphone preamp, but both benefit from it -- maybe the K601 a tad more.

It would be helpful to know what source, amp and recordings your assessment of the D2000 is based on, and approximately how many hours were on the particular pair you tried. Having personally never auditioned the K601 myself, I can't comment there.

But I will say that the Denon are indeed prodigious and better resolving of bass than either the K501 or K701 I've heard (and that particular strength of the D2000 may not be to every listener's liking). Bass that is recorded poorly sounds precisely that with the D2000; and rewardingly vice versa for well recorded bass tracks.

My experience with the D2000 (see my signature for amplifiers used), and the conclusions I've reached, are radically different from what your post reports. And I happen to own, enjoy and perhaps even slightly more enjoy the AKG K501! : )

The amp determines whether the Denon's are the "World's Best"... or... "World's Worst" phones. The amp must have very low impedance, and huge amounts of current output (in contrast to voltage) for the Denons to become the "World's Best" phones.

So... always... state the amp you're using with them. That will tell us... why you're proclaiming them either the "World's Best"... or... the "World's Worst."

The World's Best... the AH-D2000??
