Aegis DIY Tube Headphone Amplifier

The amp is only as good as the signal receives and the RCA sockets are the first point of contact. Given the amount of effort required to build the amp, I feel that the WBT Nextgen socket is a good starting point. You could put cheaper sockets in but it feels like it goes against the idea of the amp TOTL. I would rather wait a bit longer and buy the best and install in once.

However, if you wanted to save a little, I probably wouldn't drop to those linked, maybe look at these from Yarbo, a German manufacturer.
Makes sense. I guess I was just looking for someone to say how great these are and how they are worth it given most products use way cheaper connectors.

I talked to Justin at ampsandsound and even for his $15k plus head amp he's using like $3 rean connectors.

im somewhat trying to achieve.. buy once cry once, even though i know thats a lie 😜
Buy once, cry over tube rolling is how it goes, I believe.

I see. Thanks for the info... locally for nos el34

Xf2 is 322 usd per pair
Phillips metal base is 451 per pair
ANd rft nos is 193 per pair

Im fully aware value is subjective but... wondering about inputs from the tube veterans here.. which of the above would be.. gold with aegis? Hehe.

All are from decent seller id say, they have their own tube testing, hichock or whatever
Are they NOS… if they are, then that’s a really good price 👍🏻

Na... your allowed brief spells of rest between finding and buying backups!
Lol, there should be at least 15 minutes of safety while the tubes are warming up.

Any thoughts ?
I am currently using these in my own circuit I am building - no issues with them and soldered nicely.. RCA connections are snug, but not too tight. They function just fine. Also, it's Amazon, if you get them and they aren't meeting your expectations, easiest returns in human history.

Has anyone ever heard of remington/ramington el34?
Those are some unique EL34's imho. Haven't seen them before.
But they seem to use a side mounted zirconium getter like the Russian 6C19 power tubes some of us know from their OTL amps.
Could you post some more pictures of these?

Edit: Consulted Pasquale Russo's great EL34 book. They aren't even in there. Am very curious now to what these are. @leftside ; any thoughts?

Does anyone know phillips el34/6ca7 metal base? Are those good? Apparently were made in holland in 1950s, metal base, but the plastic thingy on the bottom near the pin, i saw theres a version that is brown plastic and one with black plastics.

Anyone heard how it sounds before?

The metal base are good sounding tube. Compared to the XF2 OO in my experience in Aegis the SY code Eindhoven metal base make wider soundstage thats more behind you. Have a little tighter low end. Maybe a little more musical.
THe xf2 and rft both are NOS.
The metal base not 100% sure, ive talked to the seller and getting the feeling its just still measures good. He used gm or mutual conductance and said its 7.75..

When wondering about test results always consult the manufacturers datasheet when possible: https://frank.pocnet.net/sheets/030/e/EL34.pdf
That's a lower testing pair EL34 metal. Possibly had the better part of their lives.

Here's a picture of Aegis to complete the post.

As long as it can support the film cap, shouldn't be an issue. Even though it's a little big, should be relatively light. If you don't detect any noise issues with the 4uF cap, go with it then you can use your 274B without any concerns.
Just an update; I contacted Sophia Electric about their Aqua II 274B, and it's rated for up to a 47uf cap.

Cool, then you can use it with the amp as is.

That’s great… just to check though, there wasn’t a full stop between the 4 and 7. Just thinking back to what @L0rdGwyn mentioned earlier about 4.7uF being a more standard value. Could be a coincidence… hopefully 😀

They clearly said 47uf, not 4.7uf. If you read the description on the SE website, it seems to say 47uf is the max for the newest version (Aqua II), but it seemed a little ambiguous to me, so I reached out for confirmation.
