Advices for a newbie (needing a closed-back headphones)

Okay. So this is the narrowed down list according to my budget and what I gathered from all over the threads (correct me if I'm wrong).
L3000.gif

ATH-M50 - Used to be the king, favored by many? Low 38ohms, no amps required. Recessed mids. Bad soundstage. 10 oz.

DT770 - Clarity. 32ohms, 80 will be bass heavy (still good w/o amp), 250 will need an amp to fully bring out its magic. 10.58 oz.
Comfortable, in fact better than the m50's even with glasses on (not 20/20 vision here). For that I might disregard the 250 coz i think 80 will suffice, if i were to choose dt770.

SRH840 - Durable. Excellent sound quality. Too heavy for some?  44ohms. 11oz.

My top priorities would be music quality and comfort over other factors (design, portability, cables. Any chance to narrow it down to the perfect one which suits my music preference? Hope I didn't missed out anything

Both DT770 (80 ohms) and SRH840 are better than M50. I would avoid the 32 ohm because of the increase in treble sharpness on all the 32 ohm Beyers.

M50x has fixed some of the problems of M50, if the charts are to be believed. Unfortunately, they seem to have "fixed" the raspy treble by pretty much getting rid of the treble range.

Apart from the headband weight, the comfort on SRH840 is fine. Since it sounds the most balanced and clear, you could simply mod the headband.

I really wish Shure would release an 840i  with a more reasonable headband because it's the best less costly closed on ear model as it does nothing badly and fits everyone. That matters a lot in a portable.

Hi I currently own both the DT 770 pro(250ohm) and the srh840. I also tried the m50 for a few days but I couldn't wear them for more than an hour, while I can use the other two for a whole day. I bought the shure in a duty free at the airport out of curiosity, to use them with my phone during the flight, and I was surprised about how comfy they were. In terms of sq I prefer the beyers though, but they need a proper amp.

while the x1 is excellent, it's and open phone, so it's not really ideal.

Ha!  Brain fart...the X1 is indeed open.

The Shures seem the best choice out of your list given your listening tastes.. The Onkyo FC300 seems a good fit for your needs as well: http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/delightful-onkyo-es-fc300-and-es-hf300

There's also the brainwavz hm5 if you want a strictly neutral phone. Its a clone of the Fischer audio fa003

ermmm....this has got a tunnelled cave-ish soundstage, some might not like it.
But can be ethereally good for trance, chorals..ambient music.

Any good recommendations on the mod? And will it be hard to mod it?
This is my first time and I have zero skills performing surgery on this baby
