Hi friends,
 
I'm new to the audio game. I just grabbed a pair of
Sennheiser 600HD, upgrading from an ~80$ pair of Sennheiser.
 
The majority of my music is played through my HP dvt8 laptop.
I've come to understandbthat I'll be shorting myself if I don't throw
some money at an amp.
 
My questions:
 
(1) Is *some* amp (see: 50-80 range) better than no amp?
(2) Will not using an amp cripple me?

Yes. You will definitely need an amp, especially for a power hungry phone like the HD600's. For 50-80, there isn't much choice. The only thing I can think of is the PA2V2 by Gary. He has excellent service and everyone seems to love his product. For just a tad more, around the $90-100 new, you could get the Fiio E7. It is a portable Amp/DAC. It is fairly new, but there are already hundreds of happy customers. Everyone seems to love this amp. I think either one of these would be sufficient, but you definitely would not want to run the power hungry HD600's without an amp. You would not hear what they were made to produce.
