Just saw these are on sale at Amazon, read plenty of threads comparing these to the sr80i and sennheiser offerings (though the seens are too much).

At this price, what would you guys choose?

Heya,

I definitely don't compare them to the SR80i. The SR80i actually has bass and sounds like a fully capable headphone. The AD700 is a thin anemic sounding headphone, crippled in my opinion, not capable of everything. You get it because the internet tells you its great for this or that, but really, I wouldn't get it for music unless you just absolutely like the sound signature of all mids and treble and a big sound stage with very little to no sub-bass ability. I definitely don't think it's worth $100. The $50 Samson SR850 is a better deal and a better headphone in my opinion. Or for $118 the Fischer Audio FA-011.

Very best,

The AD700s are not my favorite headphone, and they're certainly not my favorite at stock, but I thought they weren't bad with EQ. I think that, with extremely heavy equalization, you can make the AD700s have an ... interesting bass response. It sounds like an overdamped type of bass -- light, lean, but present. I almost never suggest the AD700, but I'll give them a bit more praise than MalVeauX.

Thanks for the replies. DId try looking in the fischer audio FA-011, but can't seem to find a place to purchase. even through their "where to buy" page, the links are a mess. anyone know an online store that will ship to the US?

Try Gd audiobase. They ship worldwide.

Its not bad but for close to the same price you can get better.  No midbass hump and lack of sub bass make them sound thin and weak with a lot of stuff. MS-1 or DT440 are better and can be bought around the same price.

Wait for the Audio Technica M50 to go on sale. (I got mine on sale last year for $99 online)

There are better choices than the M50, unless you like their "V" shaped EQ.  Further they haven't been near $99 for a long time.  Somewhere near $160 is what Amazon wants for a pair.

Already have the M50 (for the office), looking to get something in an open headphone for home use.
Definitely want something with a different sound signature and presence, just to complement the M50.

Which so far is pointing me towards the grado line...

I should probably also add that I would rather not stay in the AT family, so that I can broaden my experience to more manufacturers.
Listen to pretty much everything except country

The ATH-AD700s light bass is a real turn off.
The Samson SR850 (made by Superlux) at $50-$60, is a cheaper price and better all around sound then the $100 ATH-AD700.
Panasonic RP-HTF600-S is a good bang for the buck headphone, and it's only $20 to add Velour ear pads.

Check the Head-Fi's Headphones for Sale section, sometimes there are some used Fischer Audio FA-011 for sale.

They are good choices. With $100 you can have both
