Mark Knopfler - Kill To Get Crimson

200px-KillToGetCrimsonCover.gif

This is still new, but I was hooked from the first listen. As most viewers here already know, Mark was the leader in the rock band Dire Straits. I will just say he is famous for a reason; the man has TONE. This new solo album isn't so much about solos as it is about 'the broad picture', but he plays with amazing restraint, and wonderful tone. I would most definitely categorize this as an audiophile release. It has a wonderful warm sound, with no bite or sizzle in the guitars, (an all too common problem in my book.) All the vocals and instruments have so much room to breathe. I am particularly taken aback by his slightly reverbish atmospheric playing in many of the songs. It almost sounds Hawaiian or surfish, except the songs tend to have more common chord progressions and/or structures.
In addition, something about this album keeps my close attention for the entire duration; something not always accomplished with Dire Straits, as much as I loved that band.

I buy a lot of music. If I could only buy one album in 2007, this would easily be it, by a country mile.

I give it my strongest possible recommendation.

Reading this thread, i saw most of the albums remembered are old school. The majority of my music preference come from the past. Most from late 50's up to 90's. Regarding all this, i decided to relate a terrific album that just came out in august 28th. I'm talking about Ben Harper's Lifeline album. It's such a brilliant album and it was recorded during 7 days in Paris. No computer not even pro tools were used during the recordings, as the packaging says. The band ended the tour and recorded the album. Ben wrote and composed all the songs and lyrics. For me, Ben Harper is one of the best artists of world's contemporary music.
  1. Ben Harper - Lifeline

I've been a Metal Head since ......well.......I don't want to date myself here.....let's just say a long time...lol. One of the best new bands I've heard in ages in a band called Throwdown. Their new album Venom & Tears is top notch. If you were ever a fan of Pantera then you will love this Album. Just my .02

^^ On Carnegie Hall, the first disc tracks 2-4 are now my favorite consecutive 3 tracks on any album of all time. It is also possibly my favorite drum tones of any album of all time.

For anyone interested, I just put up a review of this album on my blog, as found in my signature below

Kidding...
...you gotta admit that is funny

I am in the process of getting the Van Morrison catalog (I am more-or-less attacking key artists by entire catalog now, instead of an occasional album here or there)

I will order it next week.

Actually I just got Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris All The Roadrunning, and Mark Knopfler's Shagri-La. Haven't listened to both yet, but I am also loving what I've heard, and may review them in time. I have the other Mark Knopfler albums on order too.

I know alot of loving music is about the moment, and timing, but I think I am loving Mark's solo stuff even more than Dire Straits
