I think you need to add a little exposure compensation - most of those are quite dark - even with a polarizer midday shots shouldn't be like that.

A friend of mine lives in Vegas and went to Salvation Mountain a couple months back and had a similar experience. She's not religious at all but spoke a lot about how spiritual the place felt, and how utterly welcoming and warm Mr. Knight was.
