I'm starting to get onboard with the Eagle upgrade idea. You're all right that it isn't like getting the wife a vacuum cleaner. This is his hobby. He does it because he enjoys it. I doubt however that he would spend more time in Eagle then "plugged in". I would expect that he listens to music while using Eagle. I know I would
