why didnt apple use the shuffle soundchip in the Ipod? i cant imagine the price difference being that high. apple does make 50% profit on each player anyway

1. you don't know what Apple's margins are, and they are in business to make money and stay in business.

2. even if the hardware was the same, the iPod video and nano use different PCB designs than the shuffle and so the sound would not necessarily be the same.

ahh ok.

i thought u meant it just drains the battery while connected.

you can use the x5 while it charges via the AC adapter.

Yes... and that's my point. On the left is what I need to take with me to sync and charge in a usable manner on the X5 when moving around. On the right, the same with the iPod.

if u travel a lot overseas for very long times, the ipod is more convenient to charge on the go with one cable.

of course i have the x5L, i could fly around the world on one battery charge, while with an ipod id have to charge. heck i was in the mediterranean this summer, used my x5 the day before i left a few hours, flew 4 hours to london, watched some family guy, listened to music, checked out the radio at heathrow durin my wait and some more videos, flew 6 more hours to the states, and used it the whole way home. plus transferred pics while in london. still had plenty of battery left when i landed.

and usually when u travel that much, u have carry on luggage, an extra plug and little subpack is not much to add on. on any other journey, the x5L battery life is so superior you dont need to recharge.

then again, to use my fm tuner/voice recording/or transfer pics from my canon which i do regularly: with the ipod id have to spend another 60 bucks plus in accessories aka cables, plus carry around a bunch of cables. x5L - just a usb cord for the camera. fm tuner and voice recording built in. its nice.

Surely, when travelling some extra bulk is not a big deal. Which is why I've got a Tekkeon on order. For the city commute I have a super-slim player. For travelling, I'll have battery run times that eclipse the X5L.

wow, i didn't know that my topic had exploded with so many posts haha

anyways, i pretty much decided on the 60gb x5 (unless something with more capacity is coming out sometime soon). the ipod's nice and all, but i want drag/drop. i really dont care much about id3 browsing, my music is organised fairly well, so folder browsing is fine, and all the id3 tags are in order, so it really makes no difference to me if it uses id3 or folder-browsing.

thanks guys. feel free to discuss more on this topic (didn't realize it was so explosive

) if you wish.

i find the 5 Gen ipod to sound better then shuffle. The is more detail and soundstage with 5 Gen then shuffle. The bass isn't present as shuffle but I think it bass is alittle spiked in shuffle.

I forgot the exact numbers, I have seen them. But they aren't close to 50% markup.

There was an article that tried to demonstrate what it actually cost Apple to build the iPod and it was calculated at 50% of retail pricing.

After you factor in advertising, development, support, etc, the profit margin for Apple on an iPod is probably around 20-30%. Then at retail the margins are only about 10-20% depending on model.
