$500 headphone suggestion for electronic

Sep 2, 2015 at 6:03 AM Post #16 of 30
I have both the Schiit Magni 2 Uber and the Asgard 2.

The Magni will be more powerful with low impedance headphones and the Asgard 2 is more powerful with headphones 300 ohms and higher.

The HE400i is listed at 93 ohms, so I'll compare the two with my Mr. Speakers Alpha Dogs, which is 98 ohms.

I have both on the high gain setting at max volume. I *think* I'm hearing a very slight clarity edge on the Asgard 2. This isn't the 1st time. The Magni 2 Uber is definitely louder, but not overwhelmingly louder like it usually is on lower impedance headphones.

I kinda feel getting the Asgard will help me in the long run.

Yeah well if you plan on getting higher impedance headphones later you'll be covered with the Asgard 2.

Yep, in the futrue I will definitely be getting higher impedance headphones, you know, try out new things, etc.

Well, I think I have decided then, Asgard 2, and Modi 2 Uber with a pair of HE400i's. Thank you guys so much for your suggestions.
I will update you guys on how they sound when they arrive.

Thanks both.

Quote:
Hifiman 400S headphones for $299
Pioneer HRM-7 for $200
Sony MDR 1-A for $250
Yamaha HPH MT-220 for $230

I have Magni-Modi and Aune T1 mk2 tube DAC/amp sounds better than that combo.

Do you have the magni-modi 1's, 2's or 2-ubers?

Also, you mentioned the AudioHawks, and the HE's, would you recommend those to me?  I know someone who's getting a pair of HE6's.

Sorry to hear your Aune stopped working... That's a shame :((((

I have a regular Modi and a Magni 2 Uber. Bought the Modi 2 and gave it to a friend. That was Nighthawks I mentioned and HE 500's I think. They both cost in the $500-$600 range. If that's your budget, they're both pretty sweet sounding. I have problems with the cables on both though. The HE-500 cables get tangled easily and the Nighthawk cables get bend in them that I can't get out.

Hmm, interesting, so you liked the Modi over the Modi 2..?

Yeah, I'm not sure if I will want to spend 5-600$ plus amp/dac.

I feel it might be worth it to get an AMp/DAC for the headphones, though, but I guess that dpeends what I end up getting?

I definitely don't want cord issues, but haven't really read into either headphone, besides one user talking about "Audioquest's" integrity, because they sell a 2.7k$ hdmi cable....

xD Yea, I decided quickly because I have been looking at these specific products for a while and have wanted a second opinion because my family knows nothing about audio.

Just want to add that my Aune T1 mk2 wasn't actually broken, I accidentally muted it in the settings:(

Went and bought another, my friend's birthday is tomorrow, looks like he'll get a really nice gift!

AWesome!!!  So you ordered it, and just decided to see if it worked again, and realized it was muted ? >(

So you think I should get one of these instead of the magni or w/e?

You also like the modi over the modi 2?  sucks when "next ver tech" isnt' as good....

Both the Modi and the Modi 2 are great, I just didn't hear a difference.

I rendered some files using both the Modi and the Modi 2 and they nulled-which means they were absolutely identical.

I don' go for 176k, 192k, or even 384k audio because I just don't believe you can hear the difference. I play everything at 44.1.

+1

Somewhere in the discussion of the Modi 2 in the forums, someone shared that Schiit advised them that they are equivalent DACs except for the sampling rate.

Update: Ended up getting the magni and modi 2 uber, and Audioquest Nighthawks.
They sound amazing, considering it is my first audiophile experience, but I have surprisingly not been able to get to using them often due to how often I travel. I will end up buying a portable solution and potentially getting IEM's (But I hate in-ears, they hurt my ear canals).

For portability, how about a DAP + closed over-ear headphones?
