Hello everyone, I am brand new to the head-fi community, and am a noob audiophile.
I am right now looking on what my first gear should be, so far I have a budget of $800 for amp, dac, and headphones.
I have my sights on a Schiit Magni 2 Uber and Modi 2 Uber. I just have one problem, I have no clue where to look when it comes to good headphones. I mainly listen to electronic (Uppermost, lots of Monster Cat artists, and Glitch Mob).

I would love suggestions, thanks!

Hifiman 400S headphones for $299
Pioneer HRM-7 for $200
Sony MDR 1-A for $250
Yamaha HPH MT-220 for $230

I have Magni-Modi and Aune T1 mk2 tube DAC/amp sounds better than that combo.

Ultrasone Pro 900? If closed works for you.

I use them and I find them very good for hardcore techno, pop, rock and little bit of metal, mostly hardcore techno though.

Yea, I am not sure what genre Glitch Mob, and Uppermost fall under. I am looking for a open headphone though. What is your opinion on the 400i and the hd650s? Especially with my choice of dac and amp?

For your musical choices I would strongly suggest the Audioquest Nighthawk. Very clean, very loud, and with great clarity, all while being silky smooth and comfortable if you listen for long periods of time.

Very light but at the same time very durable. They list at $598 but if you get the Aune T1 mk2 you'll come in under $800.

Thanks for your recommendation! The nighthawks do look really nice. I am not sure if I am going to get the Aune though as I have heard they can be unreliable. I might just extend my budget and get a dedicated amp and dac seperately.
For my choice of music would you suggest a tube amp over solid state?

Tube over solid state is personal preference I think. Also, with tube amps, more things can go wrong-my Aune T1 mk2 just broke 30 minutes ago, the USB sound isn't working. Solid state amps tend to work for years and years-my old Headroom Maxed Out Home amp is still working solidly after over a decade.

If you are after a closed back, i would go for V-moda M100, you will have a lot of fun listening to those

For open back, i would highly suggest to go with Hifiman HE-400i, the bass is punchier and deeper than the 400s. I have owned both, pretty sure 400i will out perform the M100 in most aspect. However, you will not be able to use them on the go because of the open back.

I have the M100 and the soundstage seems almost non existent compared to other headphones mentioned in this thread.

Tube amps are harder to design for due to the high voltage. SS is a better bet on a budget, besides OTL designs like the Bottlehead Crack or hybrids like the Vali or Garage1217.

I would go solid state for your music taste. I'd highly recommend you to audition headphones before buying if possible. It's hard to find ojective recommendations.

I think I know what my plan is, get the HE400i's, and the Asgard 2 and Modi 2 Uber. Eventually I will upgrade to the Bifrost Uber, but until then, the modi.
My only concern is, am I going overboard with the Asgard 2, and should I just get the Magni 2 Uber?
Thank you so much for the help!

I have both the Schiit Magni 2 Uber and the Asgard 2.

The Magni will be more powerful with low impedance headphones and the Asgard 2 is more powerful with headphones 300 ohms and higher.

The HE400i is listed at 93 ohms, so I'll compare the two with my Mr. Speakers Alpha Dogs, which is 98 ohms.

I have both on the high gain setting at max volume. I *think* I'm hearing a very slight clarity edge on the Asgard 2. This isn't the 1st time. The Magni 2 Uber is definitely louder, but not overwhelmingly louder like it usually is on lower impedance headphones.
