If I was 17 I'd be renting my body out to rich old women (Plenty of them around) you just escort them to theatre, take them out for something to eat and then bang them silly until they pass out. make sure they give you your "tip" before they pass out.

Why not waste your money on audio stuff? What else do you have to worry about? You have no rent, bills, insurance, or expenses of any kind at your age. If I was into this hobby at your age I'd spend all my money on it. As long as you can establish some guidelines and rules and aren't going into debt, why not? I spent all my money on random stuff when I was young, but when the responsibilities started piling on then I became responsible and spent and saved my money according to my commitments.

Plus, is it really your money that you're spending anyways?

That's what I've been going by for an long time (what you said above), but I begin to realise I keep replacing stuff I buy, and losing money when I resell it (if I can), and I buy a lot of stuff I don't really need and that really are "waste of money products for me" or just for peace of mind. For example, yesturday I spent $20 on an item from ikea for cable management which is stupid because the only person that the cables bug is me, and if I wanted to I'm sure I could ignore the mess.

I also fear that when I move out I will be in for a big surprise like many people have said. I am sure I will not be able to afford everything I can now from my barmitzvah money in 10 years.

You're 13 right? You've still got some time to figure that out and a ton of growing up to do. And if you're worried about stretching out your Barmitzvah money, then get a job

Well not all kids are on someone else's bankroll. I have already palced a good deal of money aside for investments and "rainy day" money so neither I nor my parents have any problems with me spending the money I'm making right now. I'll leave it at that before we start getting too off topic.

To the OP if you're handy at woodworking, that's another great source of income. I turn Koa pens and make small Koa boxes in my spare time and it brings in a lot of money, you have to have a lot of tools and equipment available however.

Thaddy, you tell me that, yet if I ask others on this forum, they will tell me to invest my money and save it. *Shrug*. I love getting advice from people, but I usually don't know who's advice to even take first of all. Then I got through a long thought process and yadayadayada. I am thinking of buying whatever I've wanted for a long time with my Barmitzvah money (I am 13 btw), because it is money intended to be spent on something from what I understand, hence why they are called gifts

. I should enjoy it I think, not put a bunch of money in the bank and wait. On the other hand.. Heh, damnit!

To the OP, welcome to team young-n-poor.

I'm in the same situation as you and I have found that you just have to accept your situation. I sometimes start to think about the things I could do to get money in my free time; and also about all the money I could invest in audio equipment if I just stoppped partying every weekend and stop going to the movies. Yeah, I could have a killer setup right now but that would mean to stop being an adolescent and I'm sure that later I'd regret not having enjoyed my adolescence like I'm doing now. But that doesn't mean I don't make audio purchases every now and then. Say like, every 3 months I get enough money to spend on a nice piece of gear. Actually, now that I think about it, I buy music all months and I really focus more on enjoying the music than worrying about my equipment not being top notch.

So, my advice to you is, enjoy what you have right now, try to just enjoy your music instead of the equipment, do what an average 17 year old guy do and try to be calm knowing that when you get first real job, you'll get an Orpheus instead of a first car and I'm sure you'll enjoy it more than if you had that now.

That's exactly what I'm going through at the moment. When I first got a job, it was "Yay! Money!" $350 on a digital camera I rarely use, $150 on a watch I rarely wear, and a lot of other random crap that's now lying around (Doogie Howser on DVD?!). All that spending taught me two things: it's very, very easy to burn through money; and, most importantly, I need to be an educated buyer and prioritize my spending.

It was a crash course in the value of money, but it worked. Now, in anticipation of paying back a school loan (payments start in 4 months), I'm hoarding away money like the next Great Depression's right around the corner.

Dont get drawn in too much about what other people own on these forums.

It's not a competition.

Remember some people are much older and have high paid jobs etc etc etc. What seems like a resonable purchase in their eyes is a car with tax, insurance and petrol for a year in mine.

You do have an advantage of the living with parents thing though. You are young and have no real out going funds. Be carful on what you spend your money on, make sure you actually need it. Try waiting a few weeks before buying what you want. I found that sometimes I was just hyped up and bought stuff I didn't need or use. Waiting a few weeks should clear your head and allow you to subjectively think about an expensive purchase.

Also research stuff before you buy it. I hardly ever impulse buy. Mainly cos you often end up with crap for more money than something thats 10 times better for half the price.

oh and remember.... there is always room for different hobbies other than just headphones.
