2010 - Your Favorite New Releases So Far?
Aug 16, 2010 at 2:47 PM Post #65 of 149
Great thread! I am excited to check out so many of these top 5's, so much so that I just spent 20 minutes or so copying and pasting them in an Excel Workbook.
I only did the 1st page of this thread as I am at work and this is the max amount of time I can spend on this right now.
If anyone else likes this idea and also has the inclination to contribute, would they pick up on Page 2 and add to this workbook and post it back here when done.
I will check tonight, and add more if it is still incomplete, and post it back for all. Not sure anyone else finds value in it but for me it is a great way to check off music I want to look into to see if I can find any more "gems".

DOH!!! It says I cannot link attachments. I will post it to my humyo account and paste the link here for anyone to grab it:

LIFE Long & Black Sparx - The Waiting Game

It's definitely my favorite hip hop release of 2010. I recommend it to anyone, that listens to hip hop.

Worth a listen

The Black Keys - Brothers - Just a lot of strong, well played songs

Megan McCormick - Honest Words - A voice like Alison Krauss playing country to straight-rockers - definitely a candidate for new artist of the year and she is a talented guitar player too.

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma - weird and hard to take on first listen and the first two tracks almost lost me and they still pretty much stink.  But fortunately I went past that.  Definitely cutting edge/dense stuff and not for everyone, but I've been listening to this album a bunch.  Definitely sample first to see if it's your kind of thing - which could be describe as cosmic jazz.

Fun stuff particularly before summer leaves us

JOBA - Handshake & Apology - I think this is available only as MP3 download. Two guys from Germany that sound like Wham! meets The Decemberists.

She & Him  - Volume Two - still not crazy about the woman's voice, but I got over it.  I listened to it from start to finish which gets rarer and rarer for me these days.

Best Coast - Crazy For You - Love the reverb.  Kind of beach music attitude meets late 50's pop meets a David Lynch film

Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid - A bit too processed but she is talented

Scouting For Girls - Everyone Wants To Be on TV

The Like - Release Me

Eliza Doolittle - Eliza Doolittle - Probably for the 14 year old girls but I liked it too.  Go figure.

Albums I Haven't listened to long enough to have a strong opinion

Dead Confederate - Sugar - So far, so good.

Walkmen - Lisbon - so far, don't get the hype

Liars - Sisterworld - mixed thoughts so far

Menomena - Mines - just might not be my thing

Vampire Weekend - Contra - I know, I know.  But just getting around to this

The New Pornographers - Together - so far, so good

The Dead Weather - Sea of Cowards - not holding up to Horehound

I need to add another album to my list, and it goes way up near the top. At first, I have to admit i did not like MGMT's new album Congratulations very much. I liked the first 2 songs pretty much from the start, but the rest of the album just didn't hook me.

I have been listening to it pretty regularly, and this album has really grown on me. It is definitely better than the groups first release, though there is really no radio single anywhere to be found. This is some smooth psychelia, and the lyrics are very clever in many cases. I am glad I didn't let my first impression dominate my opinion of this album, because it is right up there with The Suburbs in my opinion. In fact, it will probably beat The Suburbs as my favorite album of 2010 because it is concise with really no throw away tracks, whereas I feel The Suburbs could have used some fat-trimming to be honest as it doesn't hold it's energy well across the entire album. Both are exceptional however, and are in heavy rotation in my listening.

You don't like Zooey Deschanel's voice????!!!!  I didn't know it was possible

I'm in love with it if you couldn't tell haha.  I guess I'm the opposite.  I'm not crazy about the music but I got over it because of how much I love her voice.

I had no idea that was Deschanel (who I find adorable).  But ... honestly her vocal range is pretty limited.  Not to worry, that didn't stop John Lennon and a host of others ... but it is my viewpoint.
