Alessandro MS-1's shipped for US$99. Can be ordered direct from here.

They can be ordered with an 1/8" or 1/4" plug, so specify which one you want (I assume 1/8" for use with a portable?).

I would go for the grado sr-80. I find them better than the 60's even unamped, and I'm sure they're much better amped incase the like will ever happen. I love mine. Closed - I'm sure the hd 280's are the best (at least after adequate burn in) for under $100. Its all personal taste though so can't comment to much

My first question would be:

What kind of music does he listen to?

Grado's are great for rock, but they are very detailed, and can make electronica sound bad. I find them distracting when I can hear that the Techno DJ needs to clean his records off. And grados have lots of treble that can be too much w/ techno.

Will he be using them on the move? Like on busses/trains etc., or in other noise environments? Will he be using them in areas where other people may be annoyed by leaking sound? Like school/studyhall/the office/etc.

If so, a Closed headphone might be a good choice. When there's competing external noise, it will help protect his hearing because he won't have to turn them up as loud to hear them well over the external noise.

It's worse the sony style headphones. It sucks, very murky , no detail , just alot of crappy bass. Also the leather heats up VERY fast.
