their prices will run a bit high though, as they are a retailer, not an online vendor

This is a outside of your specified budget, but have you checked out the iBasso D10. I would cover all your needs (USB,Optical,Coax). It is a DAC and AMP combination that is getting very good reviews. The website states that they are out of stock, but you can still order them. One gut ordered on Monday and got notice today that it shipped. The price is $275 + $22 shipping.

Another option that is very close to the D10 is a Headroom Micro DAC. There are currently a couple in the for sale forums. I think they are going for about $220. This DAC does USB and optical. No Coax.

ya. max ill pay is around $200. maybe $250 if it is really needed. And I do not need 2 inputs anymore. i just need one input, usb or coax

well, changing your input requirements doesn't change the equipment we're likely to find for you, most of the suggestions made will still stand, there aren't many decent S/PDIF D/A's for $150-$200 (theres a lot for $300+ though)

you might consider the E-MU 0404, which will replace your X-Fi entirely
you might also consider the Firestone Spitfire, which is probably the only S/PDIF D/A for under $250 that comes to mind

the 0404 is a pci card...i am going to be using my laptop which has a coax or usb out

the 0404 USB is a USB external audio processor which can accept optical, coaxial, or USB connection to the host computer

the Firestone Spitfire is an external D/A which accepts S/PDIF coaxial or TOS input

I really have to ask, why are you making this so bleeding difficult for everyone else?
