Speaking of color, I finally got a chance to give those colored iPhone 5 housings a go.

A +1 to Apple on this.

Apple phones for the most part, (not sure about 6/6+) are pretty much one of the only replaceable mass marketed smartphone on the market.

Reliable sources note that iPhone screens are made by the same company that does Gorilla Glass but in either a different way or using the same product. The source by Isaacson and others didn't go into specifics however.

Multiple sources by Bloomberg and others have also noted that specific Android flagships in the past like the S4 were more prone to breaking during standardized tests

After my mother bought the Galaxy S5, I looked online to see about user replaceable parts...there....pretty much is none.

After 10 minutes of using Yosemite:

Like
  1. New boot screen (aww yiss)
8aJ2Zcx.jpg

  1. Apple logo on the lid fades properly now
  2. Blur and transparency everywhere
  3. Ambiguous + button now makes app full screen
  4. Full screen animation is smoother and slightly faster

No like
  1. New spotlight is in the dead center of the screen
  2. New icons are ugly, I would've preferred new blur + old icons

Worth it.

I use Alfred 2 instead of Spotlight. I keep mine top-center and have for years, but I believe that you can relocate where the search box pops up if you wanted to keep it top right like Mavericks and earlier.

I'd be fine if it was just a blurred transparent search bar, with no text or icons. But look at this:

Gotta make those iPhone 5S looking like 5C!

It's a 5, but yes, this is what the 5C should've been, because the internal hardware of the 5 and 5C are pretty much identical.

Looks diferente, but the cracked glass everywhere hurts me :frowning2:

Well, it looks good as new now!

That's rather pretty. I like it. Too bad I have a 6 now. :p If I were planning to keep the same phone until it died I'd probably want to do a custom colored case like that. But since I upgrade every year it just doesn't make sense for me to bother, it'd probably ruin the resale value.

Yeah, that phone's owner still had 6 months left on the contract, so it was worth fixing, given the screen and the housing's all busted up. Resale value would go up in this case, because besides the screen and back glass being cracked, wear and tear on the black iPhone 5 is especially visible. It's now an iPhone 5C Aluminum Edition!

iPhone 5/5S was really porne to scratch on that chamfered edge, that was a beautiful detail, but really need some care and use of cases to not turn an black iPhone into a silver one...

AND BTW, how you boot screen in black on Yosemite? mine is white...

-1 to OnePlus for the camera quality. See the second picture, it's sometimes a hit-and-miss with the white balance. I have to refocus more than I usually have to on other phones to get it right, like in the three other pictures.

Yes, I really envy Apple for that. They take hardware design much more seriously than everyone else, and there is a mature market for awesome aftermarket parts. I initially got the OnePlus One because it was promised to have StyleSwap, but now that's canceled for good, my interest in it has considerably decreased.

Not surprising; the iPhone 6 is marketed to have ion-strengthened glass, which is essentially the same technology that Gorilla Glass uses. Same tech, different name.

At most, you can get battery covers of different colors or materials. Other than that, pretty much nothing else. The thing with Samsung is that you can get a lot of original components, but no one bothers to manufacture custom colored stuff for it. In the case of the display, Super AMOLED is to blame. It is a wholly proprietary technology that only Samsung can manufacture efficiently, and because the production cost is so high (relative to conventional LCDs and stuff that iPhones use), it wouldn't be very profitable to do so.

I'm pretty sure the iPhone 6 is the same thing, that's in part for the good sales number and the parts are not that complicated to replicate of repair, standard connectors, no glue inside, so with a good knowledge of electronic and money, anyone can repair and make a custom iPhone, that's one thing i love about iPhones.

Opening most Macs are still much easier than the 90 percentile of Windows based laptops though (I worked in a repair shop).

The soldered RAM and storage options do put a damper on things. But one can still access it easier to repair some of the things that you still can like fans, some battery models etc.

I already repaired my mac and changed some parts for better performance, and i must say, i love having full access to the motherboard and all parts, that really helps a lot, but the soldered RAM on the new Macs is a step back on repair :frowning2:

Is Yosemite any good for someone who doesn't use iCloud? Seems like everything is iOS this, iOS that and I don't use iOS this nor iOS that.

Don't use full-screen apps since it it's not convenient for managing windows. I'd hate swiping the Trackpad 3 times just to get to one window and swipe back 3 times to get back to it.

Yeah they were, the 5S kinda made it less obvious on the space gray version because it contrasted less with silver, but aluminum just doesn't fare well against scratches and dents. See this iPhone 4? Apparently it fell 20 feet onto concrete and the screen broke. But see the stainless steel chassis? It is in very good shape considering the drop. Barely any scratches or deformation. I'm always raving about the iPhone 4/S's stainless steel construction, and it's for good reason.

I don't know how to change the color of the boot screen, it was black to begin with.
