I tried Skyping my mom and she said that was all she heard; she couldn't even hear me speaking because the feedback was so bad. Is that normal? O.o

"listen to this device" should be off, did you turn it on for Skype?

I had "listen to this device" turned off when I was making the Skype call.

Okay, maybe the mic is dead then. 

 
The reason why you got the feedback for when you selected "listen to this device" is because the mic picks up the faintest sound, which is amplified again and again because it gets played back from the speaker.
 
Try using the built in windows sound recorder, and see if you still get the sci-fi sounds. It could also be a skype issue, if you were skyping with the speakers, and not using earphones.

What the heck, I just tried the sound recorder and even made a test call on Skype and it works just fine... O.o
