Try mpv, great player, good font typeset rendering, overall much better performance. Or at least mplayer2 with SMPlayer (I'm not sure if you can use mpv as SMPlayer for the GUI backend) if you're into something more menu-y and visually intuitive.

It seems like there are some conditions where MacBooks underclock themselves for no apparent reason. Possibly this is happening, thus greatly reducing performance and resulting in lag.
