The right DAC and tubes with EQ and the Yaxi Alcantara TH610 pads are what really make the AH-D5200 stand out to me and why I got rid of the Fostex TH-X00 PH... prefer the bit more expansive and layered sound with excellent clarity and improved mids from modded AH-D5200 on such setup over modded...

I think photography would be the most analogous hobby to headphones/music listening one could do as it can cover both the equipment and media/subject which you are trying to observe/enjoy/give your spin on.

Everyone is different... I much prefer modded Fostex TH-X00 PH and Denon AH-D5200 to the ZMFs I've heard. The Fostex / Denon biodyna drivers have a fuller, more solid & pleasant sound to me along with more perceptable and visceral subbass presence.

Still enjoying the D5200 - no itch to buy any new headphones or audio related stuff at all. Modded D5200 and Porta-Pros are all I need and am satisfied with to enjoy music and shows/movies. The past two months have been into custom modding a 4WD Kyosho Inferno 1/8th RC buggy... already spent...

Tried the suede, didn't like what they did to the sound at all... liked their comfort though. Would be interested in trying the elite velours if they keep comfort of the suede and but don't butcher the sound. Haven't heard anyone talk about how they sound on an X3 but should be the best...

I like warm...and my work setup right now is pretty warm: AH-D5200 w/ Yaxi TH610 Alcantara pads + Project Ember II w/ 6H23P-EB + DFR + EQ (both Loki and Foobar)... + alien pop :L3000:... Less warm than a Purpleheart though... and I actually really like it for that reason... much more control...

With the stock pads on D5200 I did find treble a bit bright, tried the Yaxi TH610 pads based on my experience with experiementing with pads on the TH-X00 and the Alcantara version worked very well for it - toned down and smoothed the treble, expanded the sound stage a little bit more, and...

Got in the Dekoni pads (Choice Suede) to try with the X3... not really liking them right now. Comfort is good, but they do the Dekoni pad signature move of muddying/muffling up the sound and bloating the bass... X3 sounds more like an X2 now (bloated/muddy low end). Will try some EQ, but just...

Agree... and with Yaxi TH610 Alcantara pads it gets a little more relaxed treble and bit more subbass presence over stock... along with improved comfort. Like a more refined TH-X00 Purpleheart with much less congested sound... the Fostex TH series (modded) simply isn't as good in detail...

Not sure, but for $200 they are an absolutely great headphone. Second favorite to my closed back Denon AH-D5200... another pair I picked up for ~$200. Don't have the beautiful biodyna subbass punch or vocal forwardness of the AH-D5200, but do have a larger sound presentation and a bit warmer/...

You ran them on the Lyr 3? Denon AH-D5200 is tame in low end compared to the Fostex biodynas... much more controlled and detailed where the TH-X00 series have the massive low end with less control and just a bit of bleed into mids. AH-D5200 with Yaxi Alcantara pads is slightly still just a bit...

YAXI TH610 Alcantara pads... takes the edge off the treble and gain more bass presence, little more spacious sounding as well since physically more room to breathe. They just require a spacer to add to the mounting rings as they would slip off too easily otherwise... easy to make with...
