Have you thought about the Little Dot MKIII tube headphone amp? It is a awesome unit with preamp outputs, would go nicely with the Rockits AND will do wonders with your headphones too. Here's some food for thought. In reality you want to keep the sound card's volume level at 100% for maximum...

I bought a KA-5700 amp with a KT-5500 tuner 14 years ago and I have never regretted it. It has very little noise if any and sounds warm with very good detail. My KRK KNS-8400 headphones sound amazingly good on it, so yeah, it does make a great headphone amp. Definitely proves old school still...

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. On my Xonar DS I used the Burr-Brown OPA2134 and yes, you CAN hear a difference in the timbre and imaging. Female vocals come through with no edginess to the sound on my monitors and the low level detail is amazing for a sound card...

I had the same problem with low volume when I plugged my 8400's into my laptop. They really do need an amplifier. Seems that all truly good speakers and headphones need a good amplifier to come alive anyway. Until I get the Little Dot MkIII I am saving for, my good old Kenwood KA-5700 integrated...
