Async mode breakthrough for USB DACs!

What <$300 speakers to recommend to my friend for movies
My friend asked me for advice on speakers to buy for primarily watching movies, 5.1 channel, so as I don't know anything about home theatre-related audio, I thought I would post here on his behalf and get suggestions. His price range is up to $300. I know that's low but he's not an audiophile...- Crowbar

Benchmark DAC1 now available with USB
Why pay $60 when there's an $2 way to defeat ground loops? Leave earth connected to the chassis, but between earth and the power supply ground use a heavy 10 ohm resistor, paralleled with two antiparallel diodes (opposite directions, in parallel) of a current rating higher than the equipment...- Crowbar

Looking at the transformer specs, the phase distortion is not too bad, but the THD is unacceptable, especially at low frequencies. This is nothing close to transparent. Note also that they don't present a measurement of the hysteresis, which is a form of distortion specific to cored inductors...- Crowbar

Ultra-low distortion sound card input for FFT?
The I/V is current feedback and embeds a filter. There's no useful voltage at the input since the input impedance is fraction of milliohm and not really constant over the audio band.- Crowbar

Ultra-low distortion sound card input for FFT?
Unfortunately those THD analyzers don't show the individual harmonics, which is critical since different harmonics have a very different perceptual weighting. The oscillator looks great though.- Crowbar

Ultra-low distortion sound card input for FFT?
Since the DAC performance is not known, I'll need to isolate the I/V contribution to distortion, and thus need an ultra-low distortion sine generator. Then I can add the DAC to the loop and have an idea of its contribution. The 19k+20k is probably my best bet, since sound card ADC analog...- Crowbar

Ultra-low distortion sound card input for FFT?
XO or VCXO, I haven't decided yet (same jitter and price from what I understood of the quote). It's only cheap because I'm going to order a 100. I might organize a group order since I won't need that many (initially). I need to measure if using a CDCV304 clock distributor will have a low...- Crowbar

I wonder if this NI digitizer would be available for rent somewhere. Renting AP is about $2400 per month here, can't get any worse than that.- Crowbar

Best PCB program under $500?
Interesting. I hadn't heard of Easy-PC before. It's not much more expensive than diptrace, so I'll have to do feature-by feature comparison between those two and Eagle as well.- Crowbar

Ultra-low distortion sound card input for FFT?
Is there any sound card with lower than -100 dB noise/distortion of its input (preferably lower than -110 dB)? I want to avoid renting an Audio Precision to do distortion measurements since it's over two thousand bucks a month where I live. And I mean not just for 1 kHz, but at least 10 kHz...- Crowbar

Best PCB program under $500?
The problem with the really nice stuff is that the really nice stuff is Altium Designer and that's about $12,000. :/ As for autorouter, it'd be nice for the digital stuff but I guess not the most important thing. I'd say the interface (both ease of use and power) and parts libraries are the...- Crowbar

Of course not. The power supply should have a high enough rejection ratio to filter any contribution from the fuses. That doesn't take away from what I wrote, however--I worded myself very carefully.- Crowbar
